9 ACQUITTED OF PLOT CHARGES

U.S. May Drop Case Against

Five Others as N. Y. Jury Disagrees.

NEW YORK, June 25 (U.P.).— Government attorneys| debated -today whether to drop the charges against five remaining defendants in an alleged plot to steal National

Guard guns and ammunition and|

overthrow the United States Government. Nine defendants were acquitted late yesterday. The jury failed to agree on the cases of the other five. The Federal jurors had debated the case since Wednesday. ‘Mrs.

Helen Titus, foreman, said all but

one juror wanted to acquit the other

five. Friends and relatives of the defendants, some of whom had attended every session of the trial, cheered the verdict and congratulated those set free. All defendants had been represented by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents as members of an “action committee”’—the defendants called it a rifle club—of one of the so-called Christian Front Groups. They were seized by. Federal Agents Jan. 14. The chief witness against them was Denis A. Healy, FBI employee, who had won the 17 men’s confidence and had planted FBI agents in his home to hear the group discuss the advisability of “eliminating” Jews, bombing Communist headquarters and ‘bumping off’ a number of Congressmen.

Three Frenchmen, who identified themselves as secretaries of former French Premier Paul Reynaud, were held by Spanish police along with secret documents and a “fabu-

Spanish officials said the French Government at Bordeaux had heen advised of the seizure, since the money was believed to have come from the French treasury. The fortune, estimated at several million francs, was in gold coins, bullion and bonds. It was discovered by Spanish border police during routine inspection of the Frenchmen’s baggage.

Hoosier Plan ‘Yardstick’ in + Building - Supply for National Defense.

The Federal Government is using the “Indiana plan” of training airplane mechanics as a “yardstick” of the nation’s ability to mobilize skilled men in this field for national defense. The “Indians plan,” drafted by

mittee, is the first civic-sponsored

under way in any state. It calls for training 1000 aviation mechanics every six months as part of a national “mechanics army” to service Uncle Sam's proposed air armada of 50,000 plones.

U. S. to Finance Program

C. K. Gregg, Indiana Committee, secretary, who outlined the plan to President Rosevelt’s National Defense ‘Commission in Washington last week, said he has received assurances that the Federal Govern-

The Aviation Commitee, is a part of the National Civilian Aviation Committee set up by Col. Frank Knox, Chicago publisher recently named Navy Secretary. The first step in the program must be the securing of veteran mechanics to serve as instructors. Mr. Gregg has issued a call to all mechanics over 35 who can teach skilled trades.

‘Need Them AI

“We need them all,” Mr. Gregg said, “and immediately.” The men must be graduates of technical colleges and available for a course of instruction which they will need in the educational pro-

am. Also wanted are retired Army men who have had experience in this type of work. Mr. Gregg asked that all men interested send their qualifications to his office, 30 W, Washington St. Results of the survey for instruc‘tors will be sent to Washington immediately, Mr. Gregg said, to serve as a plan for other state committees. The training program was outlined to Robert H. Hinckley, recently nominated Assistant Secretary of Commerce, and Sidney Hillman, of the President's Defense Commission. Mr. Gregg said the mechanics would be trained at a schol to be set up at the Indiana State Fair Grounds.

The industry, scarcely more than

*.|a decade old but already an essen-

tial link in the country’s communication system, faces wartime conditions without the precedents of World War I on which other major industries can plan ultimate action. Meeting today was| the National Defense Committee of the Air Transport Association, formed in Washington a week ago to co-ordi-nate airline activity with the Government’s emergency measures. Airline executives admitted that the meeting was simply a seminar to determine how the airlines can help. All they were certain of thus far was that the most important factor was keeping the airlines operating on more frequent schedules and expanded routes. “The exact methods of co-ordina-tion of our own efforts with the national defense program have not been worked out, but we are studying the problem,” T. B. Wilson, vice president of Transcontinental and Western Air, Inc, and chairman of the A. T. A. Defense Committee, said. He hinted, however, that airline co-operation might go farther than mere expansion of existing transport service. Already his company—TWA—has offered its resources and personnel to the Government in time of emergency, and Mr. Wilson said today that the “importance of air transport and flying personnel has been proven by the events in Europe.” Eddie Rickenbacker, president of Eastern Airlines, said that the airlines could be of greatest assistance by “sticking to their own business” and developing and maintaining the existing efficiency of rapid transportation. “One of the biggest jobs in war-

‘| time,” said Capt. Rickenbacker, a

famous World War pilot, “is getting business men back and forth in a hurry—to and from the places where they have to do business. “That’s where the airlines come

in. We can render our greatest service by expanding and building so that we can handle the big business of transporting the business men.” Airlines have ' another problem linked with national defense. That is keeping the pilots they have, securing more skilled personnel, and replacing equipment. Virtually all the nation’s transport pilots are members of Army, Navy or Marine Reserve Corps, or former service men subject to call. In an expanded defense program many might be requested to serve as instructors or active commanders of flying units. With most of the nation’s qualified pilots under military service, the problem of holding old employees and securing new, skilled aviators would be acute.
