Security Prices
Break at London
LONDON, June 24 (U. P.).— Security prices today suffered one of their sharpest slumps since outbreak of the war, dealers marking prices down drastically in all sections of the list. Actual business, however, was believed to be the smallest in modern “history of the Exchange. The sharp lowering of quotations checked sell-
ing and such liquidation as did de- ¢
velop was attributed to patriots who were willing to accept large losses on their holdings in or to obtain cash to subscribe to ITOW’S new 21% per cent war loan. Financial quarters said that the City—London’s business quarter— . appears determined to put the new war loan over “with a bang” possibly to top the £580,000,000 subscription to the 1917 issue of war bonds.
Pound Recovers Early Loss
NEW YORK, June 24 (U. P.)— The “free” pound sterling plunged 71% cents to $3.66 on disclosure of
the German peace terms today and |cCo
then recovered most of the decline. The early weakness in the pound sterling - coincided with a sharp drop in securities on the London Stock Exchange. Foreign exchange dealers predicted an early resumption in deal-

"SPRINGER URGES RETURN TO HIGH TARIFF BARRIER
Hoosier Congressman Asks Huli Treaties Be Discarded.
Times Special
WASHINGTON, June 24. — Hes toration of the Hawley- -Smoot type of high tariff wall and abandonment of the Hull reciprocal trade agreements was offered as a remedy for American agriculture today by Rep. Raymond S. Springer (R. Ind.). Writing in the Congressional Record, Rep. Springer presented figures to show a rise in imports of. agricultural products from 1933 to 1939 and asserted: “In the past seven years the Administration, which went into power with the promise to protect the American farmer’s market, has negotiated 22 trade agreements with foreign nations and brought about the reduction of tariff duties on 163 competitive farm products. “Such action could guarantee only one thing—the glutting of American markets with inferior products produced under low standards of living in foreign countries, and the resultant depression of domestic prices. | “In that period, United States farm exports declined 9.2 per cent and competitive farm imports increased 30 per cent. “How, in the face of a continued loss, can the [American farmer expect to break even, much less be able to contribute to the prosperity of the country through purchase of the things he cannot bring out of the soil? “With continued loss of profit and an ever-mounting burden of taxation, is it any wonder that the American farmer is discouraged and no little disturbed about the promises which have been made him in the past? “The situation centers about one fact: He has been ‘sold down the river’ by the New Deal Administration, which in the past seven years has failed, to recall the splendid planks of a political platform which swept’ that | Administration into power in 1932.”
CORN CLOSES LOWER IN CHICAGO TRADE
CHICAGO, June 24 (U. P.). Wheat futures developed a some-
the Chicago Board of Trade today, moving fractionally above previous closing levels in moderate action. Corn took an independently easier turn. —Wheat closed off % to up % cent after losing a small fraction, July 19% @3%. Corn was down % to 1% cents, July 61%; oats 3% to 1 cent lower, July 317%, and rye unchanged to 14 cent higher,.July 423%, asked. Soy beans Closed off % to up % cent, July 80%, bid. An early dip in wheat carried prices off nearly a cent before light buying, some of which was credited to mills, arrested the downturn. The rally was extended during the sec-

day's lows. Early weakness was partly in sypmathy with an inde-
neapolis. Hedging continued light. Kansas City wheat followed the trend at Chicago while Minneapolis was more resistent to constructive movement. Winnipeg prices held around steady most of the session. Week-end and overnight foreign demand for North American grains was light.
