4-Bout Mat Card Drawn

A! four-bout outdoor grappling card has been lined up for tomorrow night at Sports Arena where Dorve Roche, a favorite here of several seasons, will try to take the aggressive Goon Henry, a “meanie” from Nebraska, in the headliner. Matchmaker Lloyd Carter has paired ' Mike Mazurki, 240, New York,.and Len Macaluso, 228, Buffalo, for the opener. Another tussle pits Silent Rattan, 178, Indianapolis, against. Buck Lipscomb, 181, Portland, Ore. Young Jack Kennedy, 228, Dallas, Tex., is going against one of the Zaharias clan when he tackles

in the semi-windup. Henry, a six-footer and a rough and tumble performer, won in his initial appearance two weeks ago. He scales 230 against Roche's 222.

HAVERFORD, Pa. June 24 (U. P.).—College tennis stars from all sections of the nation gathered here

today for the opening of the 56th annual Intercollegiate Tennis Championship tournament tomorrow at Merion Cricket Club. Don McNeill, Kenyon College, was top-seeded, followed by Joe Hunt, the Naval. Academy’s Davis Cup star, and defending champion Frank

Guernsey of Rice Insttiute.

Frank Buck Learns of a Tough Animal—the Also-Rans

By HENRY M'LEMORE United Press Staff Corresponisent NEW YORK, June 24.—We took Frank Buck to Aqueduct and were scarcely able to bring him back alive. The man who has faced jungle dangers in Belgian Congo, Sumatra, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula trembled like a child when confronted with the hazards and pitfalls of Aqueduct.

It was his first visit to a race complete confidence. Had he not looked the black panther in the eye from 10 paces? Had he not stood by in the compound while a python fought it out with a leopard? Had he not sparred, almost hand to hand, with the vicious rhino?

Bring ’Em On, Says Frank

He scorned our warnings of the :

perils that awaited him. “Bring on those pari-mutuels,” “Are they more vicious than the maddened seladang? Vainly we tried to advise him. But he laughed. He didn’t even watch the race that brought him in $10.50 for his $6 investment. “Too tame,” Buck said. “Like shooting monkeys.” So he took Dicty Step in the next one, a 22 to 1 shot. Stanley found Livingstone,

Step at the finish of the race. The Aqueduct safari from here: on out became a nightmare and the dauntless Buck must have wished he were comfortably beating his way betwene Upper Zambezi and Lower Zambezi. The domesticated horse turned on him like a maddened lion. Fighting Fox gave him a terrific beating in the fifth race. One of the favorites, Fighting Fox wound up ninth and Buck, armed only with pocketbook, was helpless to protect himself. After one more like that we followed his trail and finally found

him crouched in a corner of a coach of a Pennsy race train.

Back in New York, in his trophy room and surrounded by the heads of wild animals he had shot, Buck pointed to a vacant place on the wall. “See that spot?” he asked, pointing to a space between the heads of a jaguar and a panther. “Well, I was saving that for the time I finally bagged a king cobra, preferably one suffering from a toothache. You see, I wanted what I believed to be the meanest thing alive to hang up there. Now I've changed my mind about the cobra. What I really want to hang there is the head of the most dangerous of all animals—a race horse who doesn’t get a call.” His dream of dreams now is to bag the deadly daily double.

ERTABLISHED 39 YEARS

Let Louis Rest A While, Says Grayson

Not That He Needs It; Just No Opposition

By HARRY GRAYSON NEA Service Sports Editor Joe Louis’ willingness to tackle anybody at any time is commendable, but there is no one for him to fight, so the champion should take a long vacation. If Louis cares to wait until Billy Conn or someone develops, he can keep in shape in exhibitions and gymnasiums, where no one will have to watch him make comic valentines of soft touches such as Arturo Godoy. Louis and his managers and Mike Jacobs do not see things that way, of course, although they have cheapened the championship to such an extent that it drew little more than $100,000 at Yankee Stadium the

other night . . . a lightweight figure in the heavyweight division.

Call the Police

The police ought to do something about it right now, but Louis will next be fed the Tony GalentoMaxie Baer survivor in September.

City, July 2, brings together a swinger who finally got himself in condition but who has no heart, and a fat barkeep who couldn't possibly get in shape, but who has plenty of moxie. Baer quit to Louis five years ago,

and only last summer was stopped by the mediocre Lou Nova, who in turn was halted by Galento. Galento saved the show a year ago by catching Louis off balance and dropped him just before the Orange Oval was belted out, but anybody who saw that one knows Two-Ton doesn’t belong in the same inclosure with the Negro. Godoy was a filler-inner when Mitt Monopolist Jacobs dragged him back from Chile to provide Louis with employment at the Garden in February. And that’s all he was the other night.

Let's Call It Off

Yet for making a chopping block of a target he couldn't miss, Louis again is hailed as the greatest warrior of them all, despite a record showing him to be nothing more than a remarkable hitter. Outside of his quick knockout of Max

kept waiting two years, Louis’ record easily might be matched by any number of ordinary performers of the past. All Galli-Curci could do was sing, it is true. It is not the young savage’s fault there is no worthy opposition. But the fact remains that Louis has yet to meet an opponent through whom he could establish ring greatness. Why not call the whole thing off before Joe Louis faces a charge of homicide?
