Further Expansion Expected.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind., June 22.—Business in Fidiana
. is approaching the peak it
attained in February, 1937,
“chiefly because of current and-future U. S. defense needs, the Indiana University Bureau of Business Research re-
ported today.
Contrasted with business upturn during the last three
months of 1939 which “was in’ anticipation of foreign business which never arrived,” the present upturn “is
based more closely upon the known potential demand for durable goods which must be made to meet rearmament,” the Bureau «said. - . It predicted that “this is a demand which will expand rather slowly at first but which will gain momentum at an increasingly rapid rate as we get further into our preparedness program.”
Bank Debits Increase
Almost all types of business in Indianapolis and Indiana contributed to a three-point rise in the Bureau's. index during May. The index gained six points during "April. It had lost 15 points between December last year and March.
The Bureau said -May new car sales were considerably smaller than April sales but with this exception were the largest for more than a year. Bank debits were largest for more than a year. Pig iron production made a large gain over April although remaining below the rate of the last quarter of 1939. Department store sales gained about 4 per cent over April, the Bureau reported, and were just ahead of last year. Electricity pro- . duction rebounded from the low of April but did not attain the rate existing at the beginning of January. Hog prices returned to the January level, cattle®prices were the best this year and the index of farm prices was the highest since July,
- 1938. Retail Sales Gain
In Indianapolis the Bureau found “Retail sales made a gain of approximately 11 per cent over April volume and rose 6 per cent ahove the level of last May. Newspaper
advertising lineage increased 9 per |Choi
cent and was 13 per cent greater than a year ago. “Although bank debits declined fractionally, they were 14 per cent above a year earlier. A gain of 2 per cent in postal receipts lifted total receipts 3 per cent over the May, 1939, figure. “Permits issued for contemplated construction were valued at $1,10,658. Of this amount $491,250 was for residential construction. The permits provided for 94 onestory single houses, six two-story singles, 12 one-story doubles and one two-story double. . “Receipts of livestock at the local stockyards declined about 4 per cent. There was no change from receipts in May, 1939. Employment and payrolls reflected the increasing industrial expansion. Railroad repair shops experienced the greatest -.gain from April 15 to May 15 with 32 per cent more men working and an increase in average weekly payrolls of 42 per cent.”

‘Street Marks Time ‘Until Hitler’s Terms Are Learned.
NEW YORK, June 22 (U. P)— Trading on the stock market dwindled further today and prices moved in narrow range as Wall Street awaited the Hitler armistice terms. War issues marked time. The financial district believes the Hitler terms may give a clue to the war's duration. Non-war stocks were equally dormant. Bonds were mixed and dull.

TOMORROW 10:00—Radio City, NBC. 12:30—Music Quiz, CBS. 1:00—~CBS Symphony, WFBM. 6:00—Charlie McCarthy, WIRE. . 7:00—Jessica Dragonette, WFBM. | 9:30—Aldrich Family, WIRE.
"GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher Maurice Baron, the Radio City Music Hall's summertime conductor, has pulled a diversified selection off the library shelves for tomorrow’s regular broadcast at 10 a. m. on NBC-Blue. ] Henrietta Schumann and Jan Peerce will be the soloists; Miss Schumann. playing the Concerto for| piano, trumpet and strings by the contemporary Russian Shostakovich, and Mr. Peerce singing lyrics of Brahms, Menotti Salta and Landon Ronald. Mr. Salta is one of the Music Hall's staff arrangers, and shouldn’t be confused with Gian-Carlo Menotti, the young Philadelphia composer. Neither should the “Adoration,” which the orchestra is going to play, be confused with the familiar work of that title by Felix Borowski. This one is by C. A. J. Parmentier, New York organist. The string orchestra also is to play a Concerto Grosse by Vivaldi, the Dvorak Nocturne and Percy Grainger’s “Mock Morris.”

Frank Black, one of our busiest year-round conductors, again will wield the baton on two occasions this week-end. ‘At 7:30 o'clock tonight, NBC-Red, he will present Harvey Shapiro, cellist of the Primrose String Quartet, as soloist in
and the Adagic from Haydn’s Concerto in D. ; On the Blue network at 6 p tomorrow, Mr. Black will a — NBC Symphony Orchestra’s suminet personnel in “famous movements from famous symphonies.” This should be a dish for all who are devoted to the more hummable excerpts from the symphonic repertory. . Included on the program are the Largo from Dvorak's “New World” Symphony, the Allegro con brio from Beethoven's: Fifth, the Alegretto of the Franck D Minor; the "
the Saint-Saens A Minor Concert.
RADIO
Pinale from Tschaikowsky’s Fourth, the Alegretto from Mozart's G Minor, the Andante of the Haydn “Surprise” and the Andante Cantabile from Tschaikowsky's Fifth. . » Mendelssohn's “Scotch” Syme phony, which is usually neglected in favor of the “Italian,” will have e on Howard Barlow’s prowith the Columbia 'Broadcapting Symphony on CBS-WFBM aty1 p. m. tomorrow. The work was pired by a visit which Mena ‘made to Scotland in 1829, Mr. Barlow also will conduct Henry F. Gilbert's “Comedy Over ture on Negro Themes” and twotone poems, Sibelius’ familiar “En Saga” and Liszt's little-known “Orpheus.” Incidentally, the same con= ductor and orchestra recently recorded the “Orpheus” for Colume bia.
” = » It's a pity that Alfred Wallen= stein’s Mozart opera cycle on Saturday nights, via Mutual, is so gener= ally inaccessible in these parts. For it is being ‘hailed by those more fortunate to hear it as one of the significant contributions to the sea« son’s music, radio, concert or whate ever. Mr. Wallenstein is not ory an extremely able conductor, but also a program builder who scorns the musical equivalent of the blue-plate special. While other conductors have been carrying on the worthy work of giving hearings to American works, Mr. Wallenstein has been making’ a no less valuable contribu= tion by rescuing worthy but forgotten works from oblivion. ‘Tonight. for instance (7:30 o'clock, MBS-WOR) he will conduct the first American performance of Mozart’s 21st and last opera, “Titus.” It was composed when Mozart was 35, four months before his death, on the occasion of the Emperor Leopold’s coronation. “This is one of the very great Mozart operas,” says Mr. Wallenstein. “representative of Mozart in the full power of his genius. It is difficult to understand why it has never been produced before in this country.” The cast will include Vivian Della Chiesa, Genevieve Rowe, Hardesty Johnson and John Gurney. 8 »
