5-DAY SYPHILIS = WARD PLANNED
tity to Begin New Method
-
z July 1; 400 Can Be Treated in Year.
- A jor step toward the local « -eradication of syphilis will be taken July 1 by City Hospital when it opens a ward to treat syphilis by “the “five-day cure.” A six-bed “ward will make the treatment available to 400 persons a year. ‘In time, it hoped that the speed-up cure of syphilis will replace the present 18-month course of treatment. | U. S. Public Health Service records show that about four-fifths of the - patients stop the long treatment while they still are in the infectious stage. | The five-day cure keeps the patient in the hospital until he no longer is infectious.

Becausg of its reaction on some |
persons, only new syphilitics who are physically able to withstand the treatment will receive it, Before they are placed in the ward the gendition of the patient's heart, kidneys, and liver, will be examined thorot ughly. A small dosage of the two arsenic drugs—either neoarsphenanime or mapharsem— will test the patient’s reaction. These selected patients then will be placed in the ward where they will be under constant surveilliance of special nurses. . For 12 straight hours, a diluted solution of either of the arsenic drugs will be fed into the patient’s blood stream. en he will get 12 hours rest.

Times Special WASHINGTON, June 20.—Viewing it strictly from a short-range, coldblooded political ' standpoint, the downfall of France may prove to be the best news the Republicans have had all year. It may completely change the circumstances and atmosphere of the Presidential race. Republicans who 10 days ago were privately admitting F. D. They figure it like this: The country was sold on a help-the-Allies program, which was F. D. R.’s baby from the start. The worse the war got, the better his political prospects looked. Model Airplanes—
CITY FLIERS EYE ANDERSON MEET
National Championships to Be Held July 1-6 At Chicago.
By HARRY MORRISON
The model plane meet at Anderson, Ind., Sunday may be the scene of a good “knock-down” fight between Howard | Bonner, Anderson Flyer who won the recent Indiana Gas Model ciation meet here,
and the association members. The association members felt pretty badly about having an out-of-towner take first prize in their meet, although they said it was their fault and that Mr. Bonner’s model was “perfect.” They -have been putting in extensive practice at Stout Field, where most of their “test. flights” are held and promise a hard fight at the Anderson meet. The meet will start about 1 p. m. and signs probably will be erected at Anderson to [porn the way to the field.
‘
» | #2 8 The next big meet on the calendar will be -— National Model Airplane Championships July 1-6 at Chicago. As many of the association members ps can get away for the full week plan to make the trip. Registration bpens July 1. The $1 entry fee must be at the meet offices in Chicago by next Wednesday and an extra charge of 50 cents will be made for late registrations: Competition (will be held indoors and outdoors, | with much of the attention being given to the gas model sessions at the outdoor arena on the city’s South Side. 2 8 2 ] Indianapolis has gone for the new sailplane kits in an extraordinary way, with many of them now under construction. The new ships have a 78-inch ny are powered with the Ohllson “60,” have retractable landing gear, and weigh about three pounds. Another model attracting attention is William Kandler’s big ninefoot gull-wing type. Its only trouble seems to be an affinity for buildings and other obstructions. The other day it made a perfect landing on an electric power line, hooking its prop under a cross-piece. A long string and lots of jiggling got it down with er casualties.
Harold Stofer’s new Class C plane is almost ready and probably will {fly in the Anderson meet. He is waiting for his motor, an Ohllson, which he expects will add sufficient power to beat the already good records he has made with the model. Recently he made a 2 minute 25 second flight with a 17-second motor run. 2 8 A flyer at Pengusy. 0., brought out an unconyentional, “loose-wing” job in a recent meet there and made some outstanding flights with it. : The wings are bound together with rubber bands at the fuselage, instead of being almost completely inflexible. When standing on the runway, the ship is said to resemble a tired butterfly. After the ship ‘takes off, the wings snap into position with plenty of ihedral angle. With the flexible wings, the ship is not so easily thrown off its course. The wings absorb the shocks of cross current winds. i. » ” A new track record for model automobile racing was established at the Indianapolis Model Racing Club meet Sunday at Somerset Ave.
|| and 16th st.
Charles Beinke of Indianapolis sent his racer around the six laps in a little more than 22 seconds, which is an average speed of almost 40 miles an hour. This speed was considered especially good by Tom Stephens, association official, “considering the car was in the air a good part of the time.” | Other winners were Donald Cauble, Harold Stofer, third; Harry Frankie, fourth, and Berlin Furry, fifth, all Indianapolis entrants. The group will meet at 7 o'clock tonight at the track.
75 IN CITY TO VISIT NEW ALBANY SUNDAY
Floyd County natives living in Indianapolis have been holding reunions here for the last three sum-
fl mers, but they are going back to
New Albany this year to see improvements made since the 1937 flood. The annual reunion will be held next Sunday, with a dinner at 1 p. m, in the New Albany Country Club, according to Ernest Huber, reunion association president. Judge John M. Paris of the Floyd Circuit Court will speak. Then the group will tour New Albany and see Silvercrest, the State’s new southern Indiana tuberculosis hospital. About 75 reservations have already been made, according to Miss Eva Neafus, Sefreiary-lrsasurer.
