RURAL, CITY TAX EQUALITY IS AIM
Over-production in New Program.
Equitable distribution of property taxes among rural and urban
of the Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc, legislative platform, Schenck, ‘president, said today. Details of the Hoosier farm organization program to be presented to both political parties after the Democratic state convention next week now are being worked out. On a national basis, the Bureau’s chief interest is to prevent a repetition of the farm over-production which occurred during the last war, Mr. Schenck said.
Production Watched
Co-operating with farm organizations in 39 other states, the Indiana bureau will take a firm. stand against sny attempt to intensify farm production which would be followed by a period of speculation detrimental to the farmer, the Bureau chief said. Wheat and corn production are reaching record levels this year and the - graneries already contain enough food to tide over this nation for a year, he said. “There is no need of producing more than we can consume,” he said. “The effect of such a policy already has been demonstrated. “If we seek to avoid a repetition of 10-cent corn and 6-cent eggs, we must keep our productive capacity in line with current demands.” In Indiana, the Bureau's program
lief, and the building of roads and schools, in addition to property taxes and assessments, Mr. Schenck said. ; Education Stressed
" Indiana farmers are interested in seeing a gradual extension of state support for educational institutions, he said. This is necessary to raise the standards of rural schools to those of urban schools, he added saying that this’ policy merely follows out the constitutional right of equal educational opportunity. “Another of the things in which we are interested,” he said, “is a maintenance of the present system of financing highways. Never again should our roads be financed by a property tax levy.” Speaking generally Mr. Schenck said .that he believed that sending quantities’ of foodstuffs’ to the homeless civilians in Europe will be necessary but that the relief should not come from the farmer alone. The transportation of food must be financed by capital and labor as well as the farmer with each group bearing its proportionate share, the Bureau president said.
