REMAIN ON JOB,

CONGRESS TOLD,

I Public. ‘Worried By Crisis

“Recess of 6 Weeks to2 Months Is Debated.

By THOMAS L. STOKES Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, June 19. — Ad,ministration leaders were bringing pressure on rank-and-file Democratic members today to support a recess of Congress starting this week and lasting six weeks to two months. They were encountering considerable difficulty because of a rising tide of letters from constituents urging Congress to stay on the job during the international crisis. Some members fear that if they go home, constituents might be inclined to ask: “What are you doing here?” New Argument for Recess Opponents of a recess had a new argument today with President Roosevelt's announcement of a plan for universal defense service, which he said he would submit to Congress within three to six weeks. Submission of the proposal, he said, would depend upon plans for a Congressional recess, but he remarked that he could call Congress back during a recess. Imminence of the universal-serv-ice plan, with all the controversy which it is bound to raise, and with the indefinite date of its submission seemed to many members of Congress to make it imperative that they remain on the job, especially since no one can tell what other proposals might be forthcoming. The Republican leaders of the Senate and House, Senator Charles McNary (Ore.) and Rep. Joseph Martin (Mass.), are adamant against a long recess. They will | consent only to recesses of a week | each for the two political conventions, and Senator McNary. does not see why Congress should recess at all. , Democrats Retreat “Slowly Democratic leaders have retreated gradually. At first they proposed that Congress adjourn sine die. When an outcry arose, they | put forth the recess suggestion. Proposals vary from a recess end- | ling Aug. 1 to one ending Aug. 15, | [though in the end a shorter holiday | ‘may be suggested. | The argument that Congress | would have nothing to do does not |

completed—the proposed amendments ‘to the Wagner Labor Act and the Walter-Logan administrative reform bill, both approved by the House, and the Hatch political reform bill passed by the Senate. In addition, there is the univer-sal-service bill now contemplated, with perhaps other defense bills to follow.

FORCED TO PARADE,

RAWLINS, Wyo., June 19 (U.P.). —Five members of a religious sect were held in protective custody today after a series of uprisings in which three of them were forced to demonstrate allegiance to the flag and two of their automobiles ‘burned. A delegation of women last night broke into the home of Mrs. James Todd and brought her and Mrs. Everett Ruble before a crowd of 3000—more than half Rawlins’ population. ‘The women cuffed them and forced them to “show their loyalty” ‘by parading with big flags.
