State Sets 1940 Record in Awards for Bridges And Paving.

“Low bids totaling nearly two million | dollars for the construction of

13 large highway bridges and the | |

paving of 52 miles of highways were ‘received by the State Highway Commission today. It was the biggest single gontract letting in 1940. The low bids which totaled

181,911,000 were $380,000 below the

engineers’ estimates for the projects. "The largest bridge contract was for construction: of a span over White Lick Creek on Road 40 at the edge of Plainfield. The low bid was $70,849, submitted by R. L. Shutt, Indianapolis.

The low highway bids totaled $1,572,000 with a huge dual lane highway on Road 60 in Dearborn County heading the list. ‘The low bid on the project was $504,213, submitted by the O’Connar Construction Co., Springfield, IL The next largest contract was for the paving of 12 miles on Road 29 in Ripley County with a low bid of $247,718, submitted by the McMahan Construction Co., Rochester, Ind.

JURY TO INVESTIGATE BLOOMFIELD SLAYING

P.).—Prosecutor John Todd today filed an affidavit charging manslaughter against Riley Yearian and called a special session of the Greene County Grand Jury to investigate the death Saturday | of Charles Clark. BIKE RIDERS WARNED TO OBSERVE LAWS

Times Special EVANSVILLE, Ind, June 18.— Bicycle riders here may be prohibited from riding for a period of 60 to 90 days if they are caught violating the bicycle laws. Bays last night.’ The Governor has insisted that he will support no candidate before the convention, backing Mr, Bays’ pledge that the convention will be unbossed. Lewis. supporters now claim they lave at least 500 delegates: pledged, including the full 254 Marion County delegation and at least 100 from the Eleventh District. The majority necessary to nominate is 969. ; Meanwhile, the Democratic Platform Study Committee, meeting in the Claypool Hotel, continued to hear party leaders and pressure groups ‘on platform suggestions.

~ Old-Age Pension Plank Urged

The three candidates for Governor were to appear before the committee today, giving their “pet” platform ideas. Yesterday the committee heard proposals for planks that would p.edge higher minimums for old-age pension payments, an Indiana wages and hours law similar to the Fedcal law, an act requiring persons receiving township direct poor rehef to work for their money, and continuation of the State Labor Division.
