fifth consecutive advance, .while total for the first- five months of $634,678,375 was the highest for the period since 1931.
Gains Were Continuous
“Gains in contract volume,” the F. W. Dodge Corp. said, “were continuous through the month, showing no diminution after the German invasion of the Low Countries.” On the basis of facts known at this time, the company asserted, it is indicated there will be “a continued upswing of prvate construction during the remainder of this year; new facts could, of course, change the picture in very short order. “The national defense program now being formulated will undoubtedly include, in addition to Army and Navy an industrial construction, a considerable amount of emergency housing.”

Organization’s New $50,000 Home to Be Ready By July 1.
The Thetas have arrived on “fraternity row.” The new $50,000 Kappa Alpha Theta house at 825 W. Hampton Drive is almost completed on the Butler University. Fairview campus. It will be the first time the Thetas have had a house on “fraternity row.” N They now are renting a home at 160 Buckingham Drive. The last house the chapter owned, at 442 W. 46th St., was sold to the Sigma Chi fraternity last fall. The new house, which is being furnished by L. S* Ayres & Co., will be ready for occupancy July 1. From then until school opens in September, six summer school students and the housemother, Mrs. Mary Keegan, will live in the threestory Bedford limestone structure.
Plan Open Houses
Early in October the Thetas and the Indianapolis Theta Alumni Chapter each will hold an open house. The Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation of which Mrs. James L. Murray is chairman, has been planning the new chapter home for more than 10 years. The lot was purchased in 1928 when Butler moved from Irvington to the Fairview campus. Then came the depression, so the Foundation had to wait. Money from the sale of the Irvington campus house and the one now used by Sigma Chi went i the building fund. Active and alumni members did the rest. Fur-
fnishing and fixtures will cost $7000
in addition to the actual construction cost.

Phyfe tables. The kitchen has steel cabinets running the iength of and one-half the length of the west wall, On the second floor there are three single bedrooms and enough double bedrooms for 25 girls. There also is Mrs. Keegan's suite of living room, bedroom and bath facing Hampton Drive. A feature of this floor is the exceptionally tall closet

Gardening—
gardener for’ as temperatures rise, troubles multiply. Growth slows and insects increase. The gardener must fight
jweeds which are taking away sub-
terranean water and food. Cultivation is vital because even during rainy spells the ground is dry since the heat evaporates an enormous amount of water. A dust mulch is/important to prevent evaporation from the soil surface and conserve it for the plants. The more compact the earth is, the quicker the moisture rises and evapcrates. The tightly packed earth particles form small capillary tubes ‘which force the water to the surface at a greater speed than when the earth is loose. Finely pulverizing the earth, or dry mulching, relieves this pressure and conserves
tor long formal evening gowns. The third floor has one large room along the west wing one-half of which will be used as a study hall, the other half for guests. This floor also has a utility room. A large bath with three showers and a tub is on each the second and third floors. A steel and cement fire tower leads from the ground level to the second and third floor landings. 58 Will Return
In the basement are a fuel room, furnace room, two storage rooms, dressing rooms for servants, a chapter room and social room. Some 58 girls will return in the fall, although many of them are local students and will not live in the house. Miss Janice Ingham of Indianapolis is chapter president. Mrs. Walter Krull is chairman of the building committee which is overseeing construction of the new home. Robert Frost Daggett, who designed Jordan Hall at Butler, is the architect and Walter C. Kelly is general contractor.

Two reasons most beds of everbearing strawberries have been failures is that either the growing conditions were not good enough or the plants were not given enough attention. A steady supply of moisture and a sufficient good fertilizer is needeq for a crop of good berries. Add about 50 pounds of superphosphate to enough good manure before planting for each 1000 square feet of berry area. When the berries begin to ripen sprinkle on some 5-8-7 fertilizer and cultivate into the soil. Twenty pounds per 1000 square feet is enough. Nip off blossoms and runners until about the middle of,July when you can leave the blossoms on and so set the fruit.

56-ACRE TRACT
NORTH OF CITY OPENS 195 LOTS
Homes Begin to Rise in New Meridian-Kessler Terrace, One of Largest.
Meridian-Kessler Terrance, the iargest residential addition platted in or near Indianapolis in more than 10 years, is all but complete. With the laying of one more
| stretch of water conduits, the 56-
acre triangular tract, which lies along the Canal between Illinois and: 61st Sts, will be ready for homebuilders. Already five homes are mushrooming up and a half dozen others are expected to rise soon on some of the more than 20 lots which have been sold. Most of the homes will cost from $6500 to $10,000. Builders who now are constructing homes in the addition are Maten G. Gerdenich, Richard Hill and Arthur Baynham.
Borders Along Canal
In all, there are 195 lots in the plat whose point is formed at Illinois St. and the Canal just north of 56th St. The triangle’s base is 61st St., while the two sides are formed by the Canal and Illinois
St. Winding through the addition about two-thirds the distance from the point to 61st St. is Kessler Blvd. Other east-west streets are 57th, 58th and Laverock Road. Bisecting the triangle in a northerly diretcion is Meridian St. Gladden Drive also winds through the addition, mostly northeast. All streets are paved with cement and sewers ‘already are in. Lot sizes are large, ranging from 56 feet to 80 feet in width with an average depth of 150 feet. They are priced from $1000 to $2500.
Old Tow-Path Near ,
An unusual feature of the addition is the series of 20 lots backing up to the Canal. Between the lots proper and the water is the tow-path, once a busy highway for bicycles-built-for-twe and picnicking families. The addition is the only large one rear rapid transportation and
the sales agent. The land is owned by Mrs. Altie G. Wheeler of 5256 N. Illinois St., who inherited it from her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Garver. The Garvers’ acquired it in 1885. Mrs. Wheeler has been holding the land as an investment. Mr. Cash said that because of the scarcity of Jots south of the Canal Mrs. Wheeler decided to subdivide the Garver farm. Work on the land was begun about a year ago. Albert H. Moore was the engineer and William D. Vogel put in all the improvements.
