m— Ey ‘Hoosier Backs Into Wrecks i Times Special VALPARAISO, Ind, June 14.— Ora McNiece, a local electrician, cranked his car with the engine in reverse. Here's what “happened: The engine started and the machine headed backward at a 20-mile-an-hour clip, jumped the curb, completed three laps around one intersection, made a sudden flanking movement and “blitzkrieged” a lamp post, flattening it to the ground. The car then struck a curb and bounded back. There, Mr. McNiece leaped on the running board and began to steer the vehicle. Dutch and French possessions in the area of the Panama Canal. EY CITES This proposal was first put for-
ward by the Scripps - Howard newspapers as a means of providing money for the Allies to buy war materials without reopening t-° issue of loans and war debts, and also as a means of protecting the. aproaches to the Panama Canal. In order to remove any hint of imperialism, the sponsors of the proposal suggest that Latin American republics be invited to join the United States in the purchase.
Survey Is Conducted
To determine what sort of reaction the American public might have to this proposal, the Institute conducted a cross-section survey asking this question:
“If the Allies need more money for running the war, would you be in favor of the United States and other American republics buying the British, French and Dutch possessions in the area of th Panama Canal?” - Those expressing an opinion voted as follows:
Would Favor Purchase Would Oppose Purchase Approximately one voter in every six (16 per cent) expressed no opinion. The possessions involved are the British Bermudas and Bahamas off the east coast of the American mainland; British Jamaica, south of Cuba; the Windward and Leeward Islands; the Dutch Islands of Curacao and Aruba, close to the Canal; the British, French and Dutch Guianas on the South American mainland and Trinidad just off the coast; and British Honduras inh Central America north of the Canal.
Hold Strategic Value
Many of these possession, it is pointed out, are of strategic value ir. the defense of the Canal. According to the sponsors of the sug--gestion to purchase the territory, the United States could afford to rsy a good price for them—enough to provide the Allies with a considerable sum for arms, airplanes and war supplies. . Today’s study is the second dealing with the public's attitude toward the Allied possessions in the vicinity of the Caribbean. Last week a survey found that, if Germany defeats the Allies, a large majority of American voters—84 per cent—say they would be willing to fight if. necessary to keep the Nazis out of British, French and Dutch territory around the Canal. Both surveys indicate that the public is acutely aware of possible danger to the country if these Allied outposts in the Western Hemisphere fall into German hands. The majority are willing to buy them, or if necessary to fight for them—a reassertion by the public of the Monroe Doctrine.
Defense Reason Given
"The reasons for the majority sentiment in today’s poll, as given by voters themselves, are chiefly that buying the Allied possessions would be a measure of self-defense and protection for the Canal, that “we must finance England and France in every way if they are to win.” and that if the United States does not buy the possessions, and Germany wins, “the Nazis may exact these possessions and then we’d have the dictators in our bagi yard.” Voters opposing the purchase, on the other hand, say that the United States has enough territory to take care of now, that a purchase might pring us into conflict with Germany over the possessions, and that our national debt is large enough now with out contracting other
