President-Makers Wonder Which Way He'll Jump as
Convention Time Near
s; Kansan Will Have
Following of at Least 100 Delegates.
By NED BROOKS Times Special Writer
TOPEKA, Kas., June 14.—Republican Previdentnakors
still are wondering which way
Alf Landon is going to jump.
If they knew that, some of them would be ready now to predict the result of the coming national convention. The former Kansas Governor and 1936 Presidential nominee will go to Philadelphia this month with at least 100
delegates prepared to follow his leadership in the choice
of a candidate. But Republican hopefuls who haye trekked cross-country to visit the Kansas Phinx “haven't discovered his preference. Some of his intimates think he favors Joe Martin of Massachusetts, House minority leader, who was one of his managers in 1936 and who is currently mentioned as a dark horse possibility. Mr. Landon has just entertained Wendell willkie with great cordiality. But he has not indicated whom he will support. “I'll talk about that later—in Philadelphia,” he promises.
Want Landon to Run
One of Mr. Landon’s most difficult jobs has been to persuade his admirers that he isn’t interested in the nomination for himself. He made that clear months ago, but some of his friends wouldn't be dissuaded. Even now, hardly a day passes without a friendly but firm admonition to some volunteer draft\ organizer that he won't “tolerate” any such movement. | The nucleus of' Mr. Landon’s following in the 1940 convention is Kansas’ 18 delegates, who, at the exGovernor’s suggestion, were nominally pledged to the “favorite son” candidacy of 74-year-old Senator ~ Arthur Capper. "His influence is strong in neighboring Missouri and is felt throughout the farm belt. In the East and Far West scattered delegates are looking to him for guidance.
Make Topeka Pilgrimages
Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio, District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey of New York and Publisher Frank Gannett have visited Topeka to court Landon support. Of Senator Taft the ex-governor said: “He made a splendid impression.” - Then he added: “And so have other candidates.” . Mr. Landon’s renunciation of suggestions for a bi-party coalition and postponement of the Republican national convention has served as a tonic for midwestern party leaders whose morals had drooped as the war emergency added power to the Roosevelt third term movement. Mr. Landon’s strategic position in the selection of a presidential nominee shares interest with the influence he will exert in the preparation of the party platform. Kansas delegates, meeting here recently, named him as their representative on the resolutions committee. Since his 1936 defeat Mr. Landon has insisted that the road to a 1940 Republican victory lies in a liberal platform which would win back independent voters who went over to the Democratic side in the last two elections. He intends to fight for such a platform.
WILLKIE BOOM ALTERS PICTURE
Some ‘Doubtful’ Delegates Predict Swing to Utility Leader.
By NOBLE REED The political flurry created by the Wendell L. Willkie presidential boom in Washington this week, is causing some Indiana Republican ana.ysts to revise their scorecards on the Hoosier convention delegates’ sentiments. Although Indiana supporters of Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio and Thomas E. Dewey of New York still claim their following is as “strong as ever,” several delegates in the aoubtful camps are predicting that when the balloting begins at Philadelphia June 24, all of Indiana’s 28 delegates will be ready to swing to Mr. Willkie. Irwin Among Backers.
Although Mr. Willkie, the Hoosierporn New York utility chief, has only five or six sure votes in the Indiana delegation at present, observers are forseeing dexelopment of a bandwagon sentiment for him in the State. The nucleus of the Willkie strength in the Indiana convention celegation revolves around National
|Committeeman William G. Irwin of .|Columbus, Jerome Beeler of Evans-
ville, Q. G. Noblitt of Columbus and Robert Matter of Marion. Many of She old-line, regular organization delegates are: reported holding fast for Senator Taft, while the younger party elements claim seven or eight delegates will be for Mr. Dewey when ° the starts. Taft Backing Reported ‘Party analysts, however, said this sentiment -might hold only through the first ballot and thén disperse under bandwagon pressure if one should develop for Mr. Willkie. Leaders at the State Republican headquarters here said today that Senator Taft “appeared to have the support of a majority of the delegates,” but added that “many have
rot made up their minds Gohuiiely.
CITY OFFICIALS RUSH BUDGET ESTIMATES
City officials today rushed to completion preliminary figures on their 1941 budget estimates, which must be filed with City Controller James E. Deery Saturday. Mr. Deery said he would study the figures carefully before calling the first “slash” meeting next month.
