There have beet many suggestions in the past that Soviet policy would be| designed to prevent either side from becoming dominant in Europe as a result of an overwhelming victory, but such suggestions still remained in the realm of speculation. { Lord Marley said|in the British House of Lords today that several peers should be put under lock and key, “notably those who have been|so closely personally connected with Hitler, either through| their families or otherwise.” The North African conflict ‘was further intensified by an Egyptian declaration that Egypt would go to war against any power that bombs or invades her territory, which could refer only to Italy. Diplomatic relations with Rome were severed. | : On the English Channel coast, near St. Valery, the British said that 6000 British soldiers were forced to surrender after being surrounded by the Germans. but the American people are solidly against our entering the war,” he continued. “I do not agree that by giving material aid to the Allies we are going to get in.” President Roosevelt can be defeated in November, even if the war still continues, he asserted. “The intensity of the war program has increased the prospect of his defeat because the New Deal record in the preparedness program is one of incompetence,” he said. “Nobody can be found who knows what kind of a program it is going to be, how much it will cost, or how long it will take to execute. “Before proceeding any further, ' there should be*a comprehensive study and determination of what we need in a defense program and what production capacity will be required. Such an exa ation would accelerate rather than deter its execution. ] Mr. Willkie gave unqualified indorsement to the movernent to keep Congress in session during the war emergency and gave support to the principle of reciprocal trade agreements. |
