PETRILLO HEAD OF MUSIC UNION

Chicago Local's President Only One Nominated By A. F. L. Group.

James C. Petrillo, president .of the Chicago Federation of Musicians for 18 years, is to succeed Joseph N. Weber as president of the American Federation of Musicians. His election_was assured today - when he was nominated without opposition as the Federation met in the fourth day of its 45th annual

convention at the Indiana Ballroom. The nomination brought enthusiastic, standing applause from the hundreds of shirt-sleeved musicians who crowded the ballroom. :

Nominated by Chicago Man

Mr. Petrillo was nominated by J. W. Gillette of Chicago, chairman of the laws committee. It was seconded by H. E. Brenton of Boston, secretary-treasurer. “Mr. Petrillo has been feared -by employers and has now come to be their friend,” Mr. Brenton. said. “He is like Mr. Weber in this respect. He is a strong, but just, man. “He conceived an audacious plan of proving fo the public of Chicago that tusic is what the public wanted. As a result Chicago stands out ir public music appreciation and public music functions.”

Petrillo Lauds Weber

In accepting the nomination,” Mr. Petrillo paid tribute to Mr. Weber as “the man who taught me lots of things and pushed me around for my own good.” The convention accepted resolutions calling for a standard for a contract between agents and musicians. Another resolution called for the guarantee of a certain amount of employment to the musician each year by the agent. The convention also went on record against any atIehpts for revision of the Wagner Act. Officers will be elected tomorrow
