Britain Expected to Seize 50 Million-Dollar

\ Gold Deposit.

NEW YORK, June 12 (U. P)—| Italy’s declaration of war against

England and ¥rance will cost her some $40,000,000 to $50,000,000 in gold and choke off her main sources of oil and scrap steel, a United Press survey indicated today. Apart from the military considerations involved, Italy’s new status

as a belligerent promise to be a costly one.

Her trade with the United States,

running to nearly $100,000,000 a year, came to a halt with the beginning of hostilities and the invoking of the Neutrality Act here. Several of her ships have been scuttled, some have been captured by the Allies, and the rest of the Italian merchant fleet, until this week . one of the busiest in the world, virtually has been driven from the seas. The mast severe of Italy’s immediate war casualties, however, appears to be the gold on deposit in England, representing more than 25 per cent of Italian gold holdings. ‘This bullion traces back to the last war when it was sent to Great Britain as part of collateral for a loah received from its then-ally. Including this $40,000,000 or $50,000,000, which presumably has been confiscated by the British, Italy’s total gold stocks at the end of 1939

ews amounted to about $144,000,000, con- [AD PY

trasted with '$193,000,000 a year earlier and ‘with $518,000,000 at the close of 1934, prior to the Ethiopian campaign. Less immediate, - bub potentially more serious to the Italian war machine, ‘is the indicated ‘loss. of Western Hemisphere supplies of scrap metal and petroleum.

Neutrality Act Is Bar

Italy now is barred by the Allied) blockade and the U. S. Neutrality Act from her prime source of scrap|4 iron and steel. While some 205,000

tons of ‘American scrap is known a

to have reached Italy in the first

four months of this year, the war Brood

declaration automatically stopped shipment on an additional 200,000

next few months. Last year Italy bought 426,000 tons of scrap here. In the petroleum field, informed quarters believe that about 75 per cent of all Italy's oil sources have been cut off. Normal peace-time requirements have - been -estimated at about 20,000,000 barrels, of which some 60 per cent were supplied by the United States, Colombia; Venezuela, Mexico and the Netherlands| gp. West Indies, while another.16 per cent came from Iraq, Iran and The |g Netherlands East Indies—all producing areas now closed off to Italy. V. R. Garfias of the Cities Service Co. has estimated that Germany and Italy have a reserve stock of about 40,000,000 barrels of oil on hand, which, he said, would be depleted within a year or less.

Effect on U. S. Small Insofar as American businessmen are concerned, informed quarters

are convinced that 4¢he stoppage of Italo-American trade, while a po-

tentially serious blow to. Italy, will|p

" have little effect on the United States. Imports from the entire Mediterranean area last year accountefl for only about 7 per cent of U.|S. foreign purchases, while domes lic sales in that region revresentéd about 5 per cent of total exports. As a result, even if all American busines with the Mediterranean|c countries is; stopped, the loss should not amount to more than $330,000,000, a relatively small proportion of this country’s foreign trade.

The recent increase in activity in the nation’s steel factories is shown in this graph prepared by the magazine, Steel Facts. It was reported that fewer blast furnaces were idle at the close of 1939 than at the’ end of any preceding year in the modern history of the American iron and steel industry. Next week the steel companies are expected to operate at 90 per cent of capacity and full production capacity soon is
