while Demaret shared honors with a neat explosion shot from a trap to the right of the gréen. Heinlein was the only one to be jinxed by No. 13, but he recovered nicely with an eight iron after his tee shot had gone into hiding behind a tree just off the fairway. Nelson's birdie three was best on this 405-yard test. Nelson’s artistry with the irons showed itself again on the 201-yard 15th, when Byron coupled an accurate 11-foot putt with ‘a pretty smack from the tee.. This was one of the few times on the incoming trip that Nelson failed to have putting trouble. For the most part, he and Hogan found their greens shots stopping just short of the can or to the side. A long putt gave Heinlein an advantage on the 17th, and the four took fours on the par-four finals.
