Bombs bursting in air rivet the frightened gaze of Mae Clarke, Wendy Barrie and Elsie Janis in the Lyric’s forthcoming “Women in War.” Doris Day (below) is featured singer with Bob Crosby’s band, which will be on the Lyric stage for the week starting tomorrow.

British Shudder At 'Gone With'

LONDON, June 6 (NEA).—“Gone With the Wind” has created upon many in the London audiences an painful and nervewracking reaction. Here in London for nine months people have been expecting a Nazi bombing attack with all its possible attendant horrors. Now, of course, the film does not show any air raids, but it does show shells bursting in Atlanta streets, people falling dead, building set afire and a wild and panicky rush to escape from the city. The more imaginative in the audiences takes this to heart. They wonder whether something of the sort might not take place if the Nazis raid London or any other big British city. Then . there is another scene showing “hundreds of wounded Confederate soldiers lying on Atlanta streets in the broiling -sun, wihel a pathetically . few surgeons

'|and doctors seek to minister to their -agonies.

Perhaps it is due to these facts that there has been no immense rush to see “Gone.” people find those certain scenes too harrowing. Ordinarily, with a British girl playing the leading part and a well-known actor like Leslie Howard having an important role, there would be a lineup of the customers.
