Ahoy! For a

Was Before

; phe your week-end pleasure, consider Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell. More than a century ago, in the summer of 1814, Indians menaced

the settlers of Southern Indiana and the site which is now the state park. The Indians were led by SawAmochk, an outlawed Delaware, and Missiltemetaw, a Shawnee, the more bloodthirsty of the two, according to legend. They caused the Pigeon Roots massacre and murdered and scalped residents of Spring Mill. The village of Spring Mill has been reconstructed just as: it was during the days of Indiana peril and is considered by many to be the most interesting of all state parks. It has an area of 1100 acres. The village portrays the pioneer industry and social life and crafts of more than a century ago. Virgin timber surrounds the village and in the parks are unusual caverns. The park is in the Indiana limestone region and many of the original buildings were of native stone quatried in nearby hills. In reconstructing the primitive settlement, the replicas are historically correct in detail, appointment and location. The massive stone grist mill is operated by a 22-foot overshot wheel, turned by a cascade of water running SWE In, elevaie wooden flume. The w comes from a cave back in the hills. Two floors house a museum of tools, implements, more than 100, years ago. The mill is operated in the summer time and tourists purchase thousands of pounds of corn meal in souvenir sacks with the knowledge that the meal is prepared a$ of yore. Among the reconstructed buildings are the quaint log tavern where refreshments, lunch and souvenirs are sold; the postoffice, apothecary, cobbler shop, distillery, hat factory, nursery, school house and several residences. Each is furnished in the period of 1816,
