DIRECTOR BATTLES - /TO AVOID BRITAIN
Archie Mayo, high®salaried, movie
director, has good reason for not wanting to go to England to make

wood 32-week year, says England is no place to be filming movies. Mr. Goldwyn disagreed with him, so Mr. Mayo went to court. Superior Judge Emmet H. Wilsin came* to his aid temporarily by granting an injunction restraining Mr. Goldwyn from sending the director abroad and gave Mr. Goldwyn untikiune 5 to show cause why the order should not be made per-

Twenty-six answered .immediately, said they'd be glad to do it for Mrs. Rockne, for the memory of Rock, and for the school. The other guy . wouldn't answer at all, even when Natre Dame wrote and wired him. Filally he engaged an aj2nt, who went to the studio and asked for $5000.
That's where the situation stands at this writing, with the Warner Brothers madder than hops. They don’t feel like forking over $125,000 for the privilege of

mentioning the names of 27 football players and hiring actors to impersonate a few of them in a few scenes. But the movie-makers also hoped that this would be one picture which wouldn't require a title note claiming that “Any resémblance of characters to persons living or dead is purely accidental . ..” 8 8 8 . WITH WALT DISNEY devoting his talents to features and allowing his short subjects to sag under artistic emphasis which neglects story values, I'm becoming still more of a' fan for the Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies of Leon Schlesinger. The
cartoons should be made for laughs. I've just ‘previewed 'a Porky Pig and Daffy Dugk vehicle called “You Ought to Be in Pictures,” which is the first film in more than 20 years, so far as I know, to combine cartoon characters with real people. | Of course the effects are many times better and different than away back in the days of the “Out of the Inkwell” series. This isn’t a series, anyway. Mr. Schlesinger never does a stunt more than once. It deals with the ambitions of Porky, who decides he'll quit ca: ns for higher dramatic art—maybe as Bette Davis’ leading man. He trots into Mr. Schlesinger’s office, gets a release from: his contract, drives to Warner's studio, eludes the gateman, crashes a busy sound stage, is tossed out on his) ear and after some further dillusionments finds himself back at his old jobs and glad to be there. All these things happen with the hand-drawn characters of Porky and Daffy mingling with normal-" ly photographed people and backgrounds. The process is too tricky for description, 8 # 2 THERE'S a story of an executive who's a chicken fancier and who imported six rare birds from Ching at a cost of about $500. The crate was delivered to the studio, and a gateman directed it to the commissary. The chickens were etty - bedraggled from the long rip, so a kitchen helper noticed nothing unusual about them when he opened the crate and prepared them for the next day's bill-of-fare.
