/ GARDENING— | Amateur Gardener Too Often Vexed by Spraying Problem

The amateur gardener too often] becomes confused when confronted | with the problem of spraying. To most of us a spray is a spray, whether it bel for fungus or insect control. Fungicides control fungus diseases only and insecticides are used to protect plants from des:iruction by insect pests. For years the well- known bordeaux mixture has been the standby for control of.all fungus diseases, but sorjous damage often re-

sulted to the plant because of the {hydrafted lime in the mixture. Experiments at various state experimental | stations in search of a fungicide which would be less harmful, have shown that best results were obtained with insoluble, or fixed copper compounds. Somewhat slightly less effective in disease control, they are much less injurious to the foliage. Brown cupric oxide hydrate, which contains 75 per cent metallic copper, and copper oxychloride-sulfate,

copper, are two products giving satisfaction as all-around safe and effective copper fungicides. The first is recommended for fruits such as cherries, the second for vegetables. For the amateur, a prepared mixture is recommended. One known as CCC Copper Dust can be bought at the better supply houses. These prepared copper fungicides

being free of hydrated lime, will not burn| one’s skin. No excessive lime buildup of the soil will occur and much less residue remains on the foliage. Because of, this, there is less light and heat reflection and better growth and fruit ripening will result. Apply copper dust when dew is on the plants, regularly every few days beginning on the new growth. Apply just enough to cover the foli- °° with ja light film of dust.

Indianapolis May Rate Some Day Among First Five, Says Rebert Allison.

Indianapolis’ tilide as obs of the country’s five largest cities” was forecast today by Robert Allison, past president of the Indiana Real Estate - Association. The City may become one of the nation’s principal aviation centers as a result of the national defense program, Mr. Allison said. This undoubtedly would result in a population increase, although not immediately, he said. It would natur ly result in greatly increased building activities. “Because we are located in the hinterland, our own city and others similarly situated ‘will have the advantage over coast cities, because important military producing units must now be located in the in-

Inland Cities Benefitted

“Thus we may see the slow decline of coast cities in importance and ‘the rise of inland cities,” he said. “When water-born commerce was of great importance, when harbors for fighting ships were of first concern, the coast and river communities were prominent. But|. winged warfare has changed ch of this. “This new development is a Sar sociological change for the whole nation. As an girplane producer we in Indianapolis’ may soon become the most important link in air defense.”

Other Realtors Disagree

Real estate men as a whole are divided as to Mr. Allison’s interpretation. Some say its effect will be good. Others disagree. The former point to increased’ money circulatidn, increased small homes and an ultimate increase in retail buying

Pielsticker, | FHA executive assistant here, said. “The subdivision must be iree + from special hazards or nuisances,” Mr. Pielsticker said, “and it must be planned as a complete and harmonious community. “Each building lot is suitable, both in size and location, for a house. Houses are in the same general price range and of the same general type, but their designs vary sufficiently to avoid monotony.” . The majority price classification in Marion County compares with the nation-wide FHA finding that 200 of 600 approved subdivisions are designed for homes costing $4000 or less. This is taken as a sign, according to Seward H. Mott, FHA lard planning division director, that the trend toward lower-priced homeés is continuing. Since the insured mortgage system was installed by FHA the me-

and downtown building. They say that any industrial expansion like the one envisaged by President Roosevelt always has led to a higher standard of living. Those who feel the the program will have either a bad or indifferent effect on Indianapolis building, still agree that Indianapolis will have an advantage not enjoyed by some similar-sized cities on the coasts. ’ Those who say there will be a bad effect point to the tremendously increased taxes sure to come with the expansion program, some of. which levies already have been voted.

Fear Heavy Taxes

They say that increased Building of one kind comes from property owners, and that property owners will be so severely taxed that they will be unable to afford any reconstruction or new building. There is still another group that says the effect will be good for awhile, until the time comes to pay the tax bill. Then they say building will drop badly. To a question of what the net result will be, they answer: “Who knows?”

COMMITTEE TO STUDY ‘FAGE-LIFTING’ PLANS

A full-sized steering committee to direct Indianapolis “face-lifting” activities will be formed by Monday or Tuesday, Clarence T. Myers, Construction League of Indianapolis secretary, said today. The committee will include realtors, architects, builders and material men. William -C. Mabhee, who was to head such a committee, declined the offer because of press of other business, but a new chairmen will be appointed by -Monday, Mr. Myers said. “The committee will analyze carefully the “face-lifting” scheme with an idea to uncovering, if possible every negative result that could occur,” Mr. Myers said. “We intend to get every influend tial, interested citizen in the city behind the idea.”
