calup Poll Shows:

By DR. GEORGE GALLUS Director, Amer in Institute of Pub die

PRINCETON, N." J, May 28— If the rank-and-file of the Democratic and Republican parties were to select their own Presidential rominees solely on a belief in’ heir fitness for handling foreign affs Airs, the rival candidates next November might be Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert -Hoover. Although former President Hoover has railed in the general G. O. P. popularity polls of the American Institute of Public Opinion, the Institute’s latest

AMERI INSTI PUBLIC

survey, just. ecompleted, shows that Mr. Hoover's ability in the field of foreign relations is placed ahead of Thomas E. Dewey’s, Senator Arthur VanGenberg’s or Senator Robert Taft's. Republican voters selecting |Mr. Hoover stressed “his experience.” Among Democrats, President Roosevelt is the leading ‘ choice by an overwhelming margin, with Sec retary of State Cordell Hull ning second. Since events in Europe may dom-

inate American political thinking in the coming campaign, high standing with the voters in the field of foreign affairs must be considered an important asset to any candidate—either in the Republican convention which meets in Philadelphia June 23 or in the Democrats’ jamboree in Chicago a little later. Although the actual ‘ choice of candidates will rest with the conventions—and not with the general public—the Institute put the following question to a cross-sec-tion of Democrats and Republicans

Treatment Rude

For 14 Nudes

HOLLYWOOD, May 28 (U. P.). . —Police said today the nakedness had been enough ‘punishment for 14 men and women “on the fatish side of 40” who sprinted toward the. distant hills when their nudist camp was raided. “When, they get through picking out the burrs after running through the sagebrush hills, that’ll be penalty enough,” said one; raider. “They didn't take anything along but their badminton racquets.” Lura Glassey, 39, was taken to jail on suspicion of operating a nudist camp within the city limits. H. Lyman Broening, 48, also was jailed. Police said he had rung a bell warning his “guests of the raid.” Both were fully clothed.

question.

Much of the sentiment for a Rooseveilt third-term is undoubtedly explained today’s survey. When the. vote of Democrats and Republicans is combined, President Roosevelt receives 40 per cent of all mentions as the candidate best able to handle foreign. affairs, Cordell Hull receives 23 per cent, Mr. Hoover 11 per cent and Thomas E. Dewey 10 per cent. Obviously the Republican Party has not yet developed a figure with a prestige comparable to Mr. Roose-

to dominate political discussion, third-term sentiment will unquestionably continue in evidence.

LABOR FAVORS FORD IN POLL

Fortune Check on Helpfulness.

NEW YORK, May 28 (U. P.)— The American workingman believes that. Henry Ford and Senator Robert Wagner (N. Y.) are greater friends of labor than William

‘Green and John L. Lewis, Fortune

Magazine reported today on the basis of a special survey of labor opinion. The survey, published n the June issue ‘of the magazine, was made along all classifications of workers, union and non-union, throughout the counfry, by the same methods used in sampling public opinion as a whole, Fortune said. The survey disclosed also that: 1. Labor believes Mr. Lewis is more culpable than Mr. Green in the present conflict between the A. F.of L.and C. 1. O. 2. A majority, 56.6 per cent, believes labor unions should keep entirely out of pelitics. 3. Only 29 per cent of labor believes the principle of unionism is good, but an additional 30.5 per cent believes the workingman how needs the protection of unions. 4. Labor has mixed feelings with regard to present administration of unions, and is inclined to suspect the honesty, efficiency; and good faith with which unions are operated. . Interviewers asked: “Which of these people to you feel have been on the whole helpful ‘to labor and which harmful?” The answers: : Don’t | Helpful Harmful Know : P Pet. |
