Butler Takes Little State; Big State Next

Go to Purdue Saturday; Pastimers at DePauw

Butler's trackmen trained their guns today on the Big State track and field meet at Purdue Saturday, after bagging the Little State crown for the fourth consecutive year last Saturday at Ball State. Co-captains William Southworth and Charles Marshall, who scored 30 points between them Saturday, will lead the Butler delegation against Purdue, Indiana and Notre Dame.

Marshall, the one-man track

team, captured firsts in both hurdle events, the broad jump and the high jump as the Bulldogs scored 62 points. Ball State finished far behind in second place, with 36 2-5 points, ahead of DePauw with 27 3-10 points. Southworth won the mile Tun and set a new record in the half-mile at 1:56.6, one second better than the previous time set by Perry Zahn of Butler in 1985. Another Butler winner was James Stewart, who successfully defended his 440-yard title. At Purdue Saturday, Marshall will attempt for the eighth time to beat Roy Cochran of Indiana in the low hurdles. Each time the two athletes have met, Cochran has won by inches. Marshall placed second in both hurdle events last year and won the high jump, which he will defend this year. ‘Southworth will defend his half-mile crown that he won last year in 1:54.3.

Butler golfers took the Jndiana College Conference golf championship away from Earlham Saturday at Richmond. Butler won with a four-man 72-hole total of 653 strokes. Team members were Bob Phillips, Jay Ansen, John Wolf and Al Goldstein.

Coach Tony Hinkle’s baseball team was scheduled to meet DePauw today at Greencastle. Hinkle expected to play a double-header to justify the thrice-postponed tilt of May 2. The Bulldogs close the season here tomorrow afternoon, meeting Ball State on the Fairview diamond. Jerry Steiner is the probable starting hurler tomorrow,

Combined work and worry is making life anything but pleasant for the Bowes Seal Fast family, which likes to be on the safe side—and usually is. Their No. 54, with Mr. Ralph Hepburn up, has had a run of tough luck and is still unqualified. After installing a new block he-

valve, the Bowes boys expected to have Mr. Hepburn and 54 in the field yesterday. But they couldn't get the weatherman's help. The only time they could smile was when Lou Meyer, a regular Bowes accessory, dropped in to pay his respects. But Lou, who was mak= ing a stop in a ‘California-to-De-troit air trip, brought more disheartening news — he said the weather was bad all the way to Kansas City. Lou, incidentally, will be back for the race. = = ”
