THURSDAY, MAY 28, Movie-Goers To Be Polled

Dr. Gallup Will Launch

Study of Double-Bill.

NEW YORK, May 23.—A survey of America's motion picture preferences, with special emphasis on the double-feature question, will be begun immediately by the American Institute of Public Opinion, Dr. George Gallup, the Institute's head, has announced. Dr. Gallup said the survey ‘was suggested by Samuel Goidwyn, and that it will be conducted independently and financed entirely by the Institute as a matter of public service, A month will be required to devise, carefully - planned questions

which will be asked of a seientif- |.

igally prepared cross-section of the Populations, Dr. Gallup said. The slirvey may eventually include many ifformation features, he continued, but ‘its primary purpose is to find out public sentiment on the question two pictures or one. It is Mr. Goldwyn's contention that patrons are driven from the theaters by bad pictures and the giving away of “dishes, dollars and double-features.” He says the public has shown its willingness to pay more for outstanding attractions. “Every industry thinks it knows what the public wants,” the veteran producer says. “We will spend one or two million dollars on a picture and then find we have made something that the public does not and did not want. One thing is certain: The Institute's survey will open up a whole new field of public information for the motion picture industry.’
