Invention of Moving Pictures Is Left Out of Edison Films
By JAMES THRASHER
ite od SSEMS A BIT ironical that, in two pictures devoted to the bi omas Edison, M-G-M didn't include anything in the film Ography pertaining to0 Edison's invention of the motion picture. Invention of the phonograph and the ‘electric light are the main accomplishments treated in “Edison the Man,” which comes to Loew's Friday with Spencer Tracy in the title part.
Incidentally, this is the fourth time that Mr. Tracy has portrayed an actual person on the Screen. His other real-life roles, in chronological order, have been Major Rogers, the pre- “Revolution ary hero of “Northwest Passage,” Henry M. Stanley, the inquiring reporter of “Stanley and Livingstone,” and Father Flanagan in “Boys Town.” There's a quartet to test the versatility of any actor, » os » ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN the other historical and near-histori-cal musicals produced by Darryl F. Zanuck won't be surprised to lea that Alice Faye doesn't age by so much as a Wrinkle, a pound or a gray hair in “Lillian Russell,” which opens Friday at the Indiana. Neither do Henry Fonda, Pdward Arnold and Warren William, who are seen as Alexander P. Moore, “Diamond Jim” Brady and Jesse Lewisohn, respectively. The pictilre covers the _period

If Ponce de Leon were alive today, he could have saved himself a lot of time and effort by signing a long-term contract with 20th Century-Fox. » = » “Lillian Russell” being of somewhat more than ordinary length, the Indiana will show “Monroe Doctrine,” one of Warners’ historical technicolor “shorts,” in place of the usual second feature. This is a dramatized explanation of the famous document's history and function. In the cast are Charles Waldron as James Monroe, Grant Mitchell as John Quincy Adams, Frank Wilcox as Henry Clay and Sidney Blackmer as Theodore Roosevelt, * & @» Speaking of technicolor, it might interest you to know that movie technicians paint their sets in black and white only on rare occasions for black - and - white films. The reason for this is that black and white reproduce on the screen in flat, lifeless tones. So a certain type of set usually takes uniform and softer shade.
