OF Mose Grove, It Seems, Is Just About at the End

Of the Pitching

Trail

Five Times Red Sox Have Given Him a Lead, and

Five Times He Has

Blown It

By GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent

NEW YORK, May

21 —0O'1 Mose hasn't got it anymore. No

matter how much lead the Boston Red Sox give Lefty Grove, he can't

hold it, the fact be ignored that the grand Of the trail. In retrospect Grove’s swan song he pitched against Washington on opening day. It's doubtful if he'll ever go another nine innings in one game. However, the evidence indicates that he still may be valuable to the Red Sox as relief pitcher. He usually pitches two or three good innings at the start of each game, but weakens after that. Now 40 years old and the American League's oldest pitcher, Grove has been getting by on his noodle for several years. Occasionally, he could blaze a fast ball over in the clutch, but now it seems that he can’t even do that any more. Control was an asset to him until recently, Now he's making those pitches too fat, and the boys are pinning his ears back. Even as late &s last season all Grove needed to, win was a lead of three or four runs. But this season he can't hold any kind of a lead.

Here's the Record

He blew a three-run lead against Washington April 24. Then on May

1 he had a 7-1 lead over the White Sox at the end of the fourth, but couldn’t hold it. On May 7 he had Cleveland beat, 5-0, at the end of the sixth, but had to have relief. A week later the Red Sox gave him & 4-0 lead over the White Sox to work on, but he blew in the fourth. Yesterday he had a 2-0 lead and a 6-3 lead over the Tigers, but couldn't protect it. When Grove left the game in the seventh the Red Sox led, 7-6, so Ol Mose has vet to be credited with defeat. With Pinky Higgins going berserk at bat with three homers, the Tigers plastered a 10-7 licking on the Red Sox. Higgins drove in seven runs with his three homers, the last one winning the game. Jimmy Foxx hit homer No. 10 with the bases loaded. Cleveland knocked the Yanks back into the cellar by thumping the world’s champions, 10-2, enabling the Tribe to move within a game and a half of the leagueleading Red Sox. Lefty Al Smith held the Yanks to one hit until the ninth, when the Yanks escaped & shutout as a result of Dickey’s double which drove in two runs. Smith's three-hitter was his second straight victory over the Yanks and his third win of the season. Jeff Heath hit his 6th and 7th homers, pacing Cleveland's 17-hit attack on Chandler, Hadley and Donald.

Dodgers Take It On the Chin

In the other two American League games the Athletics trounced the Browns, 8-4, and moved into fourth place, while the White Sox left the cellar by defeating the Senators, 5-4. Frank Hayes hit two homers for the | A’s and Johnson and Moses got one each. Cincinnati’s pitching folded up | and the usually feeble Bees slugged out a 12-4 victory over the Reds. Al Lopez's homer with two mates on base off Gene Thompson featured a five-run rally in the third. Bama Rowell duplicated Lopez's feat in the fourth to spark a six~un rally. The Cubs, playing with a makeshift infield, beat the Dodgers again, 6-4. Tt was Brooklyn's third straight loss. The Cubs made 18 hits and batted out Hugh Casey in the sixth. Harry Danning hit a triple and homer and drove in five runs as the Giants beat the Cardinals, 6-0. Cliff Melton kept the Cards’ six hits! scattered. Scoring seven runs in the ninth. the Phils came from way back to beat the Pirates, 8-7. Mace Brown, with a 7-1 lead, retired with a sore arm after pitching to two batters in the ninth.

2 Ring Associations Recognize Jeffra

BALTIMORE, Md, May 21 (U. P.) —Harry Jeffra of Baltimore won featherweight championship recognition from the New York and Maryland Boxing Associations last night when he outpointed Joey Archibald of Providence, R. I, a 15-round bout. Jeffra was given an unanimous decision, unofficially winning 12 of the 15 rounds. He floored Archibald twice in the second round, both times for a nine-count. The result did not affect the National ‘Boxing Association’s recognition of Petey Scalzo as champion.

Fines Slapped on Frisch and Marty

NEW YORK, May 21 (U. P).— Ford Frick, president of the National League, today fined Pittsburgh Manager Frankie Frisch $75 and Joe Marty, Philadelphia outflelder, $50, for misconduct in yesterday's Pittsburgh-Philadelphia game at Philadelphia. Frisch was fined for disputing a decision at first base in the ninth inning when he waved his hands in the air and dropped flat on his back. Marty was fined for “cursing and using vile language,” Frick said.

BARTON SCORES POLITICS SETUP

Disillusioned New Yorker Hints He'll Retire in Near Future.

NEW YORK, May 21 (U. P).— Rep. Bruce Barton (R. N, YY.) said today that the experience as Representative had disillusioned him and hinted that he would soon be out of politics. Mr. Barton, one of the Nation's top advertising men, told ‘the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce that it was a “very great question” that democracy could survive in this country in the face of “indifference” by the people and their elected representatives. He deplored the action of pressure groups and remarked “it would seem that the capitalistic system in Amerjca is drawing to a close.” He said his political career undoubtedly would be brief and added that from experience he had learned that a successful CongresSman was one who “just voted for all appropriations and against all taxes.” “The moving spirit of political and national life,” he said, “appears to be ‘send me to Washington and I will get more than my predecessor.” Seventy-five per cent of all Congressmen have no means of livelihood except their salaries. Their first concern when they arrive in Washington is—will they be reelected. And if they can bring back money for their districts, they will be re-elected regardless of the national policies of the Administra-
