Indiana Friday.

MISS ANNA NEAGLE of London and Hollywood will be at the And it seems a safe prognosis that her arrival will

result in a compound multiple fracture of one of the cinema's hallowed traditions—the personal appearance, The appearance of glamour before the multitude has always been one of the more feeble offshoots of the film industry. Patrons seem-

ingly have gone to personal ap.

pearances in the same spirit which prompts them to visit the 200. They haven't wanted so much to be entertained as to ase sure themselves that their screen favorites were living, breathing humans, of normal height and usually subnormal weight. Most ly they have just wanted to look. In return, the movie stars have sidled out from the wings, told a few stale jokes about Hollywood which put nobody at his ease, assured the public that “it's a great privilege working for Colossal Studios and I hope you'll all see my new picture,” and retired. © Miss Neagle, on the other hand, is really going to do something. Three times on Friday she'll appear on the Indiana stage to sing and dance. All this should come as quite a shock to those of us who were fetched up on the hello-Ma-it-was-a-great-fight type of personal appearance. And especially since, on the basis of past screen portrayals, Miss Neagle seems one of the least likely prospects for a soft-shoe turn.

5 » » WE IN AMERICA can't be blamed for not knowing that the English actress originally was a revue star, or that her real name is Marjorie Robertson. By the time she came into our ken, she had shelved the Marjorie in favor of her rather forbidding and Teu-

tonic stage name. And she had buried her undeniable beauty beneath several layers of greases paint and serfous dramatic intentions, as witness “Victoria the Great’ and "Nurse Edith Cavell.” But in “Irene,” whose opening at the Indiana coincides with the star's appearance, you will see Miss Neagle cavorting in her original field, which is brand new as far as American patrons are concerned. For her stage appearances, she will wear the “Alice Blue Gown” of the picture and its most popular song, and she will dance the waltz which she executes in the film with Ray Milland.

It would be expecting too much |

to have Mr. Milland here as her So Rudolph Fritz of the Metropolitan Ballet has been secured for his place. The two will waltz to the music of an orchestra which Maestro Kenneth Collins of the Indiana has hired for the occasion, And as as added attraction, the star will be accompanied by Herbert Wilcox, the Irish producer director who has been at the helm of nearly all of _ Miss Neagle's

THE PARTY is scheduled to arrive from Chicago tomorrow night; on Saturday morning they will leave for Pennsylvania, where appearances in Wilkes Barre, Scranton and Philadelphia are scheduled; thence to New York,

Washington, Cleveland, Pitts. burgh and Louisville. All this will add up to one of the most strenuous tours ever made by a top-flight screen star. Not that a nine-city tour of three. a-days is so strenuous. It's just that glamour girls, when they're at the top of the heap, won't bother to go trouping. As a rule, their swings around the personalappearance circuit come when their popularity needs a shot in the arm. But here's Miss Neagle, with no bone to pick with a fickle publie. Perhaps her junket is meant Simply as “pure entertainment.” that highly specialized product of the Hollywood sound stage.

Amidst the broils and alarums of war, it is good to know that Samuel Goldwyn pursues his placid course. A dispatch from the Goldwyn Studios states that the boss is In New York, trying to get passage to England: his purpose, the production of a movie called “Undersea Boat." Mr. Goldwyn, the dispatch said, will ask the British Army to give David Niven a two-months leave so that he may take the leading part. England expects every man to

Claude Allison, Strand manager, is toying with a new idea for children’s admission. The John Peterson pavment, under Mr. Allison's plan, will depend on the child's height.

He admits one flaw . some children are tall for their age and others short. He says there are usually about three sizes in children. One size is small to 12 years old, another is 12 to 15,

and a third is 15 to adults, He would have a different admission price for each of these groups. Mr. Allison says his system would eliminate boys and girls giivng the wrong age in an attempt to get in to see a movie cheaper and it would relieve the strain on many families’ pocket books. He says he things other movie houses will try some variation of his system, when he starts to use it, because the children’s admission has long been a trial to theater managers. At the same time, he points out that the children's tickets represent almost 40 per cent of the weekly gross at the neighborhood houses. ” » ”
