The slow movement, especially, is something to cheer about, ” » » Benedict, “The Carnival of Venice”; Lina Pagliughi, coloratura soprano (Vietor),
Here is, as far as I know, the first record of a really exciting new voice. Miss Pagliughi= American, I believe, despite her obviously Italian ancestry-—-was a late-season debutante in New York this year. Her reception was quite as enthusiastic as those accorded Dorothy Maynor and Helen Traubel earlier in the season—though naturally of a dif ferent sort, Her initial record discloses a coloratura voice of poise and excellent support in addition to the required agility, Throughout her scale there is a warmer and more sensuous tone than is usually found among the florid-singing sisterhood. What's more, a sustained high E flat at the end is an authentie, full-bodied tone, Nils Nelson is the singer's ac= companist, and John Amadio provides the inevitable flute obbligato. ® » » Schubert, “Introit” and “Sanctus” Abt, “Ave Maria”; “Song of Bohemia” “Were Y ou There?”; the Hamilton College Choir, Paul A. In these two records, Prof. Fancher seems to have effected a compromise between the Don
