Reds Refuse To Be Jinxed, Whip Cards

Ruffing Snaps Yanks’ Losing Streak

By GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent

NEW YORK, May 13.— The Cincinnati Reds aren't paying one bit of attention to the “jinx boys” who are digging up new reasons every day why Bill McKechnie’s club won't repeat in the Na-|

tional League. Not being the least superstitious, the Reds ignore those crepehangers

who point out that no team which lost the World Series in four straight games ever came back vo

win the pennant the next season. Nor do they give a tumble to those | skeptics who clamor that no victim | of a no-hit, no-run game ever won | a flag. The Reds, you know, were recently humiliated by one Tex Carleton. | But since then they have given 8 very good imitation of a club] that plays each game today and forgets about yesterday and to-| morrow. Since Carleton’s no-hitter, | the Reds have won nine out of 10! games and forged into the National League lead.

Wallop Cards Twice

The Reds’ latest expioit is a twin victory over what the experts con- | cede to be their most dangerous | rivals, the Cardinals. They smacked | down St. Louis yesterday. 7-1 and 13-4, making four straight wins over the Cardinals without a loss. Up to now there seems to be no comparison between the Reds and Cards. In four games the Reds have won them all, scored 38 runs to the Cards’ 11, made 48 hits to their 35, used four pitchers (all going the route) against 12 for the Cards. Paul Derringer held the Cards to four hits: in the opener, winning his third game. The Reds drove Bill McGee to cover. Homers by Frank McCormick, Frey and Craft helped Jim Turner win his first game for the Reds. He allowed 16 hits but coasted behind a big lead all the way. The Cards made four costly errors. |

an end when Red Ruffing blanked the Red Sox. 4-0, before 41376, larg-| est throng of the season at Yankee Station. Ruffing pitched brilliantly, | allowing only six hits, and not a man reached third. Despite the end of their six-game winning streak the Boston Red Sox| maintained their game and a half] lead over Cleveland because the Browns knocked off the Vittmen, 5-2. Eldon Auker, Red Sox castoff, held Cleveland to nine hits and himself led the Browns’ 12-hit attack with three singles.

Lyons Whips Tigers |

Ted Lyons, who'll be 40 next De-| cember, pitched the White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Tigers. He allowed eight hits, two of which were homers by Pinky Higgins and Dick Bartell. Kreevich’'s triple and Wright's single accounted for the winning run. Johnny Babich. Athletics’ rookie won his fourth game by defeating the Senators, 4-2. He allowed oniy six hits.

NEW YORK, May 13.—Being a country boy who was brought up

to believe that it was neighborly

visit yesterday to the New York Y their game with the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees had lost eight really were sick folk. I feit almost them on the bench, and realized I had come empty-handed without even so much as a little jar of or some cnicken broth. There they sat, all in a row, from water cooler to water cooler, the

had only to throw their gloves on the field to conquer any enemy. With a team batting average that: would shame a twilight league club they were the Bronx Cap Pistols, not the Bronx Bombers. Bunip Balks at That One “Glad to see yd,” greeted Lefty Gomez when I walked in. “Pull up| a chair, Stay around a whiie. The chances are that you'll get to pinch hit before the afternoon is over. Our hitters are so bad they're

| thinking of calling on me in the {cluteh.”

“We haven't dropped that low, Gomez,” cracked Bump Hadley. “What's that about asked Joe Gordon. “What's a hit, | anyway? I've forgotten what the word means. You know, when my baby is born in August what I plan to give him for a present? At least, what'd like to give him. Well, I'll tell you—a scratch single through the infield.” Joe Cronin, manager of the Red Sox walked past the Yankee dugout. An Irishman who yields noth[ing to an umpire without an argument, Cronin takes a riding from the fans and rival players for his | consistent’ beefing about decisions. As he walked past, | Yankee coach, spotted two Giant | safety pins that Cronin was using to keep his pants tight around his | knees. Can’t Kill Cronin

“Look at those safety pins, boys,”

Cronin gave the dugout in general |

Applebeam or pretty close to that,”

the Yankee manager volunteered. “He's a real psychologist, all right.

A baseball nut, too. Hasn't missea a stadium game in vears. Said he knew that our trouble was mental, {and I agreed with him, except I told him there wasn't anvthing wrong that a few base knocks wouldn't cure.’ “What did he say asked. Here's What's Wrong
