FACTIONS CIRD FOR SHOWDOWN
Major Parties to Decide Who Will Take Reins in Vote Tomorrow.
Rival factions in both Republican and Democratic parties today mobilized their forces in final “showdown” fights for control of county
committee organizations at their annual conventions at 1 p. m. tomorrow. The Republican convention, which had been postponed until Monday night because of the slow ballot counting, was put back to tomorrow by County Chairman Carl Vandivier. It will be held at the Indiana ballroom. The convention had been postponed because of an emergency caused by the delayed counting of precinct committee men ballots. However, the counting was speeded up yesterday and all contested committeemen were certified by the statutory deadline yesterday noon. Mr. Vandivier said since the tally on committeemen votes had been completed he had no choice but to return the convention date to the statutory time tomorrow. Supporters of Mr. Vandivier announced that a survey of newly elected precinct committeemen disclosed that about 254 of the 341 committeemen “will vote for reelection of Mr. Vandivier tomorrow.” They said that of the 195 contested committeemen elected, 147 were for Mr. Vandivier and that the other 48 were either members of the anti-organization faction, led by James I. Bradford, or were “un-
about 70 per cent of the 146 une opposed committeemen would sup-
port him. Suporters of Mr. Bradford dis-
puted regular organization claims and reported they would have the support of at least “65 or 70 “per cent of the committeemen. County Democratic leaders tightened their organization machinery to elect Albert O. Deluse, City Councilman and grain dealer, as the new county chairman. - Their convention will be held at the Claypool Hotel. Meanwhile, the present county chairman, Ira Haymaker, announced he would “fight any opposition” to his re-election. “I'm not going to take this lyin down,” he said. “I am making m appeal for re-election as chairman to members of the party who have fought the battles in the precincts. The organization has won and the people who have fought to achieve this victory should have the right to say who is the county chairman.” Although a majority of Democratic leaders were said to have indorsed Mr. Deluse for the chairmanship, Mr. Haymaker’s supporters claimed to have large bloc of committeemen who were not in favor of changing chairmen. In an effort to put down opposition to Mr. Deluse’s election, party

leaders induced their candidate to issue a statement. Mr. Deluse said: “I am not now and never have been A candidate for this important position, but if the precinct committeemen should elect me their chairman with practical unanimity, then I shall feel an obligation as a duty to my party to accept. “I shall do nothing to influence their choice one way or another, as I feel that the chairman should be the free choice of the party.” Supporters of Mr. Haymaker contended that the county chairman apparently has been successful in nominating almost all of the regular organization candidates and that he “deserves re-election.” Other party leaders, including Mayor Reginald Sullivan and several county judges, however, have been maneuvering for a new chairman for several weeks, claiming that they want a “younger and more militant chairman for the full campaign.”
