The Gallup Poll Shows—-

PUBLIC APPROVES

U.S. AID TO

Voters Favor Candidates Who Would Give More Help if Needed: Results by Parties About Same: Low Income Groups More Isolationist. By DR. GEORGE GALLUP

against American ant into the war, political parties will take a vigorous stand to keep the country at peace. On this issue there 1s likely to be little debate or controversy.

The real issue which is almost

paign is the extent to which the United States can, or should, help Eng-

land and France short of going to war herself. Many G. O. P. ing to assess isolationist sentiment in their party an in the country. Is the public mood after eight months

leaders are try-

nantly for giving no more help than at present to the Allies. or is it for furnishing all the help the Allies sending our Army or

need except Navy? To get some indication of sentiment on this vital issue, the American Institute of Public Opinion put the following question before the voters in all areas of the country The question is necessarily hypothetical: no one can anticipate the turn of events which might cause opinion to shift. The results are therefore to be regarded merely as an indication of present attitude. “If you were voting for President. which type of candidate do you think you would be more likely to vote for? “1. A candidate who promises to keep us out of war and refuses to give anv more help to England and France than we are how giving them, even if they are being defeated hy Germany. “2. A candidate who promises to keep us out of war, but who is willing to give England ana France all the help thev want, except sending our army and navy.” The vote of those expressing a choice was Candidate Favering Greater Help for England and France if Needed ....

Candidate Opposing Additional Help for England and France ‘ kg | Approximately one voter mn every 10 (3 per cent) expressed no opinion The chief significance of the survey lies in the vote by political parties. Although many Republican leaders have been attempting to make the G. O. P. appear to be the party of peace and isolation and to paint the Democrats a: a party of intervention and war-mindedness, the study today finds virtually no difference in viewpoint among the rank and file of voters in the two parties On virtually all issues dealing with foreign policy such similarity of rank and file sentiment in the two parties has been found Todays comparison is as follows:
