NAVY TO HONOR DISASTER HERO
‘Lieut. Mons Monssen Saved Vessel During 1904 Blasts, Fire.
WASHINGTON, May 9 (U. P).— The Uhited States navy will pay tribute next Thursday to one of its most gallant heroes — Lieut. Mons Monssen, On that date, the Navy will launch a new destroyer at the Navy Yard
at Bremerton, Wash, which will be named for Lieut. Monssen. His widow will sponsor the ship. Lieut. Monssen, born in Bergen, Norway, in 1867, came to this country and enlisted in the Navy in 1889, becoming an American citizen, It was on April I3, 1904, when he was 37 years old that he performed the deed for which he will be honored. On board the Missouri, Lieut. Monssen was a chief gunner’'s mate.

One of the guns was being loaded for the fourth shot. The shell had been placed in position and the powder charge was being rammed home, when a burst {of flame shot back into the powder ‘chamber igniting the powder charge. | "The entire turret was enveloped [in flames and smoke,” Capt. Van | Aucken said. “All in the turret were | killed instantly. One man on top lof the turret was blown into the | water, “And down straight into the hand{ling room 30 feet below, flaming powder cubes touched off all the | powder charges ready to be hoisted. |" “A second terrific explosion and (the entire handling room was a mass of flames. Five officers and 24 men were dead and eight more of | the crew were to die later. It locked (as if the ship were doomed, so she
