JANE JORDAN
DEAR JANE JORDAN—My mother who is only 38 years old, seems to think that my married sister and myself cannot judge for ourselves about the things in life, and she doesn’t think we can take care of ourselves at all. Whenever we have company, or some one comes to the door, mother is always there as if we didn’t know what to say. She always misjudges our ability to do things. Please can you tell us what to do to make her see that we are old enough to judge things for ourselves? I am 17 and my sister is 18. M. J. AND E.J.
Answer—1It is natural for girls of vour age to resent the fact that their mother still treats them as children. Sometimes their mistake lies in the fact that they want to be treated as adults when it comes to claiming the freedom to come and go as they please and decide things as they please, but when it comes to assuming responsibility around the house, they still want to be treated as children who have evervthing done for them. The exasperated parent regards them, quite justly, as too immature to act for themselves. In any case the fault lies with the parent who should have given them responsibilities at an early age and gradually increased them until the children were completely independent Is your married sister living at home? If so, why did she congent to such an arrangement if she did not still feel tied to her mother in many respects and was afraid to break away? You girls are indeed old enough to look after yourself in the main. You have a right to insist firmly upon handling most of your own problems, particularly one as simple as answering the door. But do be able to call attention to the responsible manner in which vou carry out your mother’s instructions when she asks you to help her. If she doesn’t believe youre growing up, you need some proof to point to in your attitude toward work at school and at home.
DEAR JANE JORDAN-—TI am 16, a sophomore in high school, and I have been going steady with a boy of 17. I like him more than . anvbody else I ever have known. I followed advice gathered from 3 your column about going with other boys, but it just doesn’t work. He thinks I care for him no longer, and although he comes over often he seldom makes arrangements to see me in the future. He knows what he is to me and seems to take advantage of it. What should I do? WONDERING.
Answer—I never at any time said a girl could win the boy she "wanted by the device of presenting him with rivals. Sometimes a rival does stimulate a boy's interest, but the real point of going with ! another boy is to find a substitute for one who is indifferent. In my . opinion you have worn your heart on your sieeve where this boy is concerned. Why should he struggle to win something which he so _ easily possesses? If he thinks you no longer care for him, why does 5 he come over at all? < JANE JORDAN.
