CHAMBERLAIN'S SPEECH BOOSTS STOCKS’ PRIGES
N. Y. Brokers Believe Britain Plans to Pursue a More Aggressive Policy. NEW YORK, May 7 (U. PJ). Stocks moved irregularly higher in
quiet dealings today following Prime Minister Chamberlain's de-
«| fense of Britain's war policy in the
Commons. Brokers said demand was based on indications that Britain now will pursue a more aggressive war policy. Sterling continued weak here, however. The free rate sold down to $3.37%, off 3'% cents, the lowest since early 1933. Meanwhile the French franc slipped to a record low around 1.91 cents. Bonds were mixed. Australian bonds weakened in the foreign group, but others in the section acted somewhat better. U. S. Governments were quietly firm and domestic corporates were mixed. Sentiment regarding the domestic business situation turned more favorahle. most experts anticipating a belated spring rise. General Motors’ declaration of a dividend of $1 on the common was regarded as a gesture of confidence. Stocks of heavy ordnance makers which might benefit through intensification of the war met good demand in late dealings here. U. S. Steel rose a point to near 61 and Bethelhem gained 1% to 857. Air line shares were bid up sharply on better air travel statistics. A rise of 10 per cent over a year ago in April sales brought a gain of around 2 points in Montgomery Ward.
WHEAT, CORN SAG
IN LATE SELLING
CHICAGO, May 7 (U. PJ). Wheat prices on the Chicago Board
s|of Trade closed weaker today after
holding firm most of the session.
s| Prices sagged to new lows for the
day in late trade under pressure from locals and commission houses. Wheat closed 4 to 3% cent lower, May $1.05%. Corn was changed to 3; cent higher, May 65c; oats un41%ca, and rye off 1% to 5 cent, May, 64%cb. Soy beans were % to 3% cent lower, May, $1.08%4. Scattered showers over the Southwest induced light selling in wheat at the opening, but prices firmed within the first hour. Houses with Eastern connections bought May wheat to start the moderate rally and mills gave additional support. Northwestern interests were reported on the selling side early. Trade was quiet. Corn trade was featured by limited offerings and developed a firm tone under the leadership of the May delivery. Some cash demand for the current month was reported early. Prev.
