ABOUT HATCH BILL

Thirteen of Committeemen Questioned Claim They Voted Against Pigeonholing It; Result Was Announced as 14-10.

Times Special WASHINGTON, May 3.—The strange and sudden Pigeonholing of the Hatch bill by the House Judiciary Committee became even stranger today. It was announced after the Committee’s meeting Wednesday that the bill had been tabled by a vote of 14 to 10. But today, when the Committeemen were questioned individually by Seripps-Howard reporters, 13 of them. said they had voted against tabling. Since the vote was taken]

by secret ballot—an extraord- SCAN SCALISE inary procedure for commit-| tees—there is no way to tell] EXPENDITURES

men told Rep. John J. Dempsey (D. N. M)), co-sponsor of the bill, that they had voted against tabling. He declined to name them The votes, which were deposited Wednesday in the well-worn hat of Judge Hatton W. Sumners (D. Tex.), chairman of the committee, were counted by two tellers, Rep. W. S Guyer (R. Kas.) and Rep. Zebulon Weaver (D. N. C..

Recount Is Asked

“I am sure the tellers are men of integrity,” Rep. Dempsey said in the House, “It must have been an honest error.” He asked for a recount—and the House tittered. Rep. Abe Murdock (D. Utah), a member of the committee, said he would seek a recount at the committee’s meeting Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mr. Dempsey is filing a discharge petition with the Speaker todav to force the bill before the

House for a public vote. The peti-]

tion requires 218 signatures. The 13 committeemen who said they voted against tabling the bill were: DEMOCRATS (4)—Celler (N. Y),, Murdlock (Utah), Tolan (Cal), Massingale (Okla.) . REPUBLICANS (9) — Hancock (N. Y.), Michener (Mich.), Robsion (Kv), Reed (Ill), Gwynne (Iowa), Graham (Pa.), Monkiewicz (Conn.), Springer (Ind.), Vreeland (N. J.) The four who said they voted to table the bill were: DEMOCRATS (3)—Weaver (N. C.). Satterfield (Va), Kefauver {Tenn.) REPUBLICAN 1) ron (Mass.)

parently indulged — against the Eatch bill when balloting in the comfortable privacy of Hatton Sumners’ hat, but for the Hatch bill when questioned for the newspapers —is no doubt connected with the pregnant fact that this is an election year. The Hatch bill would inconvenience some state machines, by forbidding state employees paid with Federal funds to engage in politics. But an avowed vote against the bill might be political poison.

DIME AND QUARTER SAVINGS BUY PLOTS

LORAIN, O, May 3 (U. P) —Six vears ago A. W. Rahl, a contractor, got the idea that saving odd dimes and quarters by tossing loose pocket change left each night into a box would be a good method of saving. “It certainly was,” said Mr. Rahl, who since 1933 has purchased 10 city lots with money saved this way. “When the money's saved that way you don't miss it.”
