RECORDINGS

By JAMES THRASHER

Review Starts With Overture But Ends With Jive and 'Wow!'

TODAY'S PIECE starts out with a slow, sweet overture. But once past the introduction, it's going to be strictly for rug-cutters. This situation arises from the fact that, doubtless by coincidence, the record manufacturers have been busy in the last fortnight issuing platters designed to warm the cockles of any jitterbug's heart. But first of all, the overture. It's by Miss Anita Louise of Hollywood,

Cal, who, it seems, plays the harp |

besides acting in the movies. Press agents have been harping on Miss Louise's musical ability off and on for years. So apparently she decided she'd stop in at a recording studio and prove the truth of at least one glamour-girl item. The result is two records, containing “The Last Rose of Summer” and “Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms” on one, and “Star Dust” and a “Chanson Sans Paroles” by Dubez on the other. They're put out by Royale. Miss Louise's playing sounds rather stiff-fingered. And her interpretations neéd the potted palms of a hotel dining room for their fullest effect. Assisting her in all but the Dubez composition are Christian Thaulow, violinist, and Francis Tonhazy, cellist—not the Mr. Tonhazy who plays cello in the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. = = = ROYALE ALSO IS OFFERING a coupling of “Zigeuner” from Noel Coward's “Bittersweet,” and “Lover Come Back to Me,” played by Johnny Green and his orchestra. No one plays the more discreet style of dance-tune piano with more skill, taste and sophistication than Mr. Green. And he seldom has been any better than he is in the present example. Except for Carol Horton's vocals, which are scarcely in the Coward tradition, the whole performance is Grade A. And now for today’s less suave examples of the popular idiom: Columbia—Topping the list is the new Benny Goodman Sextet doing “Gone With What Wind” and “Till Tom Special” The personnel is practically a swing connoisseur's dream. Besides Benny on the clarinet, you'll hear Count Basie at the piano; Lionel Hampton, vibraphone; Charles Christian, guitar; Nick Fatool, drums, and Arthur Bernstein, bass. The boys swing together remarkably well, and the solos are, in a word, terrific. The Count's boogie-woogie piano and Christian's guitar playing are distinct acquisitions to the Goodman nucleus. Definitely a collector's item. = = 2 Two records by Benny and his full-sized orchestra also are on tap. One teams “Night and Day” and “Beyond the Moon,” while the other has “The Sky Fell Down” with an out-of-sight, slow-rock performance of “It Never Entered My Mind.” Gene Krupa fans may have any or all of three records by their favorite drummer. There's “Boog It” and “A Lover's Lullaby” on one; “Tuxedo Junction” and “So Long” on the next; “The Woodpecker Song” and ‘Say, ‘Si, Si)” on the third. The “Tuxedo” disc is a belated entry on this tune, and one of the best. To this writer, who is allergic to “The Woodpecker Song,” the Krupa version is almost palatable. Mildred Bailey—bless ‘er—is back with a coupling of “After All I've Been to You” (an irresistible chiding) and “A Bee Gezindt” (apparently a Swing Al-ley-dialect version of Yiddish). Besides Miss Bailey's calorific warbling, there's a scrumptious accompaniment, mostly woodwinds. » n 2 Bluebird—"Fats” Waller, whose

piano playing and wit are both | does |

irresistible to these ears, a swell job on two new records. ‘Oh, Frenchy“ and “Cheatin’ on Me,” a couple of old ones with a new twist, and “Fats” reaching the height of high dudgeon in the latter; “Black Maria” and “The Moon Is Low,” which has plenty of piano, but no vocals. From Charlie Barnet and his band come “So Far, So Good” and “720 in the Books"—the books being dance band folders, apparently, not hymnals. Two other Bluebird platters have a camp-meeting tone. One is “On Revival Day,” by Ford

Leary and his orchestra, with the maestro on the vocals. The other, “Preachin’ Blues,” a stirring and pointed sermon with background music by Sidney Becht and his New Orleans Feetwarmers— no less. The Leary record also has Hoagy Carmichael’'s “Hong Kong Blues,” sung by Leary and very amusing. And then there's a new Calypso record by Wilmoth Houdini and the Bamboo Orchestra. The selections are “Poor, but Ambitious” (brother, can you spare a job) and “Resisting Temptation” (Mr. Houdini's sentiments are sternly moral). = 8 = Vocalion—"Out of Nowhere" and “Goodbye, My Lover, Goodbye,” appear on wax as done by the Les Paul Trio, two guitars and a bass. Vocals are by Jimmy Atkins. The trio can riff in the same league with Indianapolis’ matchless boys at the Southern Barbecue. From the Cab Calloway atelier come “Boog It” and “Chop, Chop, Charlie Chan"—with Cab practically sedate, and the band practically perfect. Solid is Jimmy Lunceford's “Time to Jump and Shout.” And its companion piece, “Pretty Eyes,” is on the mellow side—but in the groove. os » ” Victor—Duke Ellington has switched from Columbia to Vietor, doing “So Far, So Good” and “You, You Darlin.” Both have a generous helping of Ellington piano at the start, smooth arrangements and impeocable playing all the way through. Best treatment of those tunes from “Buck Benny Rides Again” has been cooked up by Tommy Dorsey. They are, of course, “Say It” and “My, My.” Mellow Dorsey, too, is found in “Shake Down the Stars” and “Moments in the Moonlight.” (The lyric writers certainly are going astronomical on us.) $ & 4 Varsity—You really must hear the old cornet virtuoso's warhorse, “Carnival of Venice,” as done by Harry James. With his band accompanying, the Texan trumpeter does all the tricks in the traditional style and meter, then takes the piece out of this world with some swing variations of his own, and winds up with a rousing Louie Armstrong finish. Wow!

Before you buy a laxative cereal, these are some of the things you should know: What's the proof that it’s effective? How widely is it used? Has it stood the test of time? This is ALL-BRAN’S record. For 20 years, Americans have looked to this famous cereal as an answer to the problem of common constipation (due to lack of the right kind of “bulk” in the diet).
