Critic Finds Himself a Bone Of Contention to Gnaw 'Pon

THUS FAR IN 1940 Hollywood has been pretty good to all of us, even those who look at movies for a living. On and off the screen, there have been causes for rejoicing. For one thing, at least six pictures have some along in the first 15 weeks of the year that are far and away better than any representa- ine tive half-dozen for a good many seasons back. Likewise there was oe by making about one picture a Mr. Hays’ annual report on the ’ i. 8 4

one of his most cogent and factfinding messages. During 1940 Ginger Rogers and Alice Faye have stimulated recovery in many bachelor hearts by returning, via legal action, to single blessedness. In recent weeks the Ivy League was humbled when Ann Sheridan, behind perfect interference by the Warner's publicity department, trounced Harvard in a thrilling intersectional contest of vituperation. And Bobby Breen, still capitulating to adolescence, shuns the sound stages. Yes, all has been well—too well, perhaps. For there has come over me recently a. feeling of vague .disquiet. Perhaps, I've thought, this is a fool's paradise. Perhaps I'm getting soft, sitting here day after day and twining laurel leaves into wreaths for the brows of Hollywood deities.

So finally I said to myself, “Come, come! What's a critic for if not to be critical. Be captious. Go find yourself a bone of contention and pick it to shreds!” Providentially my eyes fell upon the press book for the Indiana’s coming attraction. The title read thus: “’Til We Meet Again,” I had it! The. title, of course, should be “Till We Meet Again.” Till is no measly contraction. It is a perfectly self-respecting preposition,® full of years and honor. Till is a direct descendant of the Middle English and AngloSaxon til, and akin to the Old Friesic, Icelandic and Danish til; the Swedish till; the German Ziel; Old High German zil, and Gothic tils. On the other hand, -until is a combination of un (as in unto) and til. (The reason we don’t spell it untill is probably due to the fact that some ancient lexiecographer either ran out of ink before the final “1” or else was

suffering from an Old PFriesic hangover.) Anyway there's no excuse for Hollywood, with all its smart peo‘ple and high salaries and with every resource of modern science at its command, letting that ‘til get by. I declare, I don’t know what the movies are coming to!

Powell Directs Store's Opening

‘HOLLYWOOD, April 23 (U.P.).— Stimulated by one of the strangest “premieres” in Hollywood's history, the 10-cent store in Dick Powell's building at Long Beach was doing a rushing business today. Mr. Powell owns a two-story building some 15 blocks off the downtown district. When he rented part of it to the store, he told fellow actors: : “I think we should do some thing for that store.” He hired a bus to take his friends to the opening and fecl them quar- | ter lunches in boxes on the way. Mayor Francis Gentry gnet the! delegation in froni of the. store. ‘Solemnly he handed Mr. Powell a huge pair of wooden shears. Mr. Powell snipped a ribbon across the doorway and the store was open. He sold records and sheet music at the music counter. Irene Rich waited on kitchenware customers. Meredith Willson, composer and con-

sidewalk. And in keeping with Hollywood’s premiere customs there were spotlights inside the store because it was daytime out.

ONLY ‘A GARBO or a Chaplin can remain a screen celebrity while making such rare appearances. Obviously, if their plan for Shirley were carried out, her annual films would have to be something pretty pretentious. She certainly couldn’t hold her place with the big-timers by appearing once a year in a B-budget flicker produced by Sol Wurtzel. If the disagreement continues between the Temples and Zanuck, it may end with immediate and amicable cancellation of her contract. Thereafter she might continue at Fox under some new arrangement,

ably among all the studios. Chances are, though, that the
