Serve People,” Petit Says

Otto W. Petit, Republican candidate for Sheriff, told a campaign audience last night at 2217 E. Michigan St. that if he is elected he will take office without any obligations “other than the promise of serving all the people.” Discussing law enforcement, Mr. Petit said: “The combination of gasoline creates power, but sometimes whisky creates speed and accidents. Hogg Says ‘Little New Deal’ of, Indiana Is “on * The Run.’

KENTLAND, Ind, April 18— Business, industry. and agriculture must be relieved from oppressive laws, David Hogg, Ft. Wayne, Republican gubernatorial candidate, said in a talk at a party rally here last night. “The Republican Party was born to save the nation,” Mr. Hogg said. “This year in Indiana it must rescue three and one half million Hoosiers from the tentacles of the little New Deal octopus.” Mr. Hogg charged that the State administration had transferred $500,000 from the Highway Commission’s construction fund to the maintenance fund. “Supposedly,” he said, “this is for a secondary road improvement project. In truth, it is for the purpose of adding more payrollers. It is further evidence that the little New Deal is on the run. They need more voters. But this year, even their now monotonous method of ‘buying’ votes will not stop the Republican party from victory in Indiana.”

T0 PREVENT CRIME

Glenn W. Funk, ‘Republican candidate for Prosecutor, pledged -that if elected he would seek to prevent crime, particularly among youth, instead of merely punishing offenders, in a talk last night before the McKinley Club. “Five million American children are subsisting on starvation doles,

their families unable to rear them

properly,” he said, “and our public officials have completely shirked their responsibility future citizens. This has resulted in a terrific upsurge in crime and juvenile delinquency. “The record here has always been

crimes by these juveniles, but it is universally recognized by authorities on crime and its prevention that the threat or experience of punishment does not stop youths from committing crimes. I propose to begin on this problem at the point where the crime has not been committed as yet.”
