Coach Opposed to Higher Baskets
DETROIT, April 18 (U. P.) —Instead of helping the small basketball player as was intended, a basket 12 feet high actually would halt one of the major points in his game, according to Coach: Lloyd Brazil of University of Detroit. has experimented with the 12-foot basket considered by the national basketball rules committee. His university cagers have been subjected to the higher hoop after playing under the regulation nets 10 feet up. “The high basket,” Brazil said, “discourages the shorter players ; from cutting in to the backboard for ‘dog’ shots which give the game much of its color. The tendency of our boys was to stay outside the four circle and concentrate on pot shots. This tendency probably would be the general reaction.” Brazil also said that raising the basket levels would force abandonment of many small gynmasiums for basketball games, and that fans would “protest another radical change in the cage rules.”

Fenelon Has
'Em Puzzled
(Editor’s Note: Following is the fourth in a series of 12 dispatches highlighting the top contenders. for the Kentucky Derby.)
By JACK GUENTHER United Press Racing Editor "NEW YORK, April 18.—Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons stood in the haze of a late Maryland afternoon at
Bowie last November and watched a horse he trains for Belair Stud win the endurance handicap by a head. It was the colt’s first triumph in 13 attempts and he paid 15-1 on straight bets, but old Mr. Fitz had this to say: “I'm going to win the 1940 Derby with Fenelon.” Sunny Jim won the 1939 Derby with Johnstown,_the 1935 Derby with Omaha and the 1932 Derby with Gallant Fox, but this time racing men thought he was overly optimistic. Fenelon had run in the money only five times in his first 12 races. But the Fitzsimmons prophecy could have been recalled with profit at Jamaica last Monday when the same shoddy Fenelon whipped the highly touted Carrier Pigeon in his first start as a 3-year-old. Fenelon Lazy?
Fenelon is a puzzling performer. On one side, his record is spotty, his earnings of $13,455 are not particularly high, and his jockey, Jimmy Stout, says he is lazy. On the
III and the general reputation of
three. : William Woodward's horses are never whipped by a jockey as juveniles, so they seldom are urged as much as their fellows. Omaha and Johnstown were just fair at two and Gallant Fox did nothing. Yet all of them were great at three, and Fenelon may follow that tradition. Everything points to it. Both his breeding and general physique back up such a supposition. A rangy, racy colt, he should improve with maturity. Also, he has the gameness necessary to run in the stretch. His usual excuse
ways gains from the final turn to the finish wire. Because of this, his future book price has held firm at 30-1. : Price Will Be Cut
That price will be cut in the new issue of odds late this week, because Fenelon’s triumph at Jamaica on Monday was the best of his career, He was away in a field of six—all Derby aspirants but one— and was held in that position for the first half mile while Marogay, then Carrier Pigeon, cut the pace. He moved up to second on the turn and wore down Carrier Pigeon in the race for home. The colt’s first stake start is expected in the Wood Memorial, although he may go Saturday in the
|€ligible as well for the Derby, the Withers and the Belmont stake, Tut was not named for the Preakness. If he should upset Bimelech at Churchill Downs he would give Woodward a tie with Col. E. R. Bradley in Derby victories—four apiece.
Southport Wins: Schienbein Stars
In a final test before their own relays Saturday afternoon, Southport High School's track -team scored a 55-54 victory over Ben Davis .at Roosevelt Stadium yesterday. Chief point-gatherer for the Cardinals: was Ed Schienbein, who won both hurdles, placed second in the broad jump and competed on the winning half-mile relay team. /
