ROAD THROUGH "FAIR GROUNDS IS PROPOSED

: Bel-Rose Group Also Wants

Sidewalks, Curbs,

Pavements.

Blocked from a direct route to downtown Indianapolis by the State Fair Grounds, the Bel-Rose Civic League will appoint a committee in the next two weeks to study the possibility of cutting a street through the area. | There also will discussion of proposed sidewalk and curb construction and the paving of a number of streets in the neighborhood. © C. Titus Everett, league president, will preside. Petitions already have been filed with the Works Board for sidewalks and curbs on EH sidb Ave, between -46th and 50th Sts; on Sangster Ave., between 42d a d 46th Sts.; on Arsenal Ave., between 46th and 49th Sts. on the east side only, and on E. 46th St. from Arsenal Ave. to the Monon Railroad.

P.-T. A. Supports Plan The proposed sidewalk on E! 46th St., from Arsenal Ave. to the Monon Railroad is being supported by the P.-T. A. of schools 70 and 9%as a safety measure. Children who attend these schools are forced to use this section and at present | must walk “on or dangerously close to this main artery.” | A petition for cement paving also has been filed by | the group for Sheldon Ave. from |46th to 62d St. An additional petition is |being drafted, according to Mr. Everett, for paving on Hovey Ave, between 46th and 52d Sts. and on ‘Schofield Ave., from 42d to 46th Sts. This proposed construction would “complete the street and sidewalk program of the league for the! |presMr. Everett said. Long an Objective. The League’s proposal to construct a street through the Fair Grounds has long been an objective of the Bell-Rose citizens. The proposed street would cut through the eastern part of the grounds and would not interfere with the buildings or the racétrack, league members believe. Nirs. Allen Martin, secretary of the group, has reported many additional members among occupants of Marcy Village, newly constructed community center on 46th St.| A postoffice substation to be established at Marcy Village will also serve the area surrounding the village. At present there is only ionce-a-day delivery in the area. | |

five months ago when the Board issued an emergency order raising the retail price of bottled milk in the Indianapolis fro 11 to 12 cents a quart until May 1. Paul Wetter, Federation president, said today that his organization will be well represented at the State House meeting and will “continue our fight for an open market.” C. Wright Humrickhouse, Control Board secretary, said the alternative to the present retail price fixing would be an grder permitting companies to fix their own prices in open market competition. It was at the hearing five months ago that the Federation and other civic groups charged that the price of bottled milk was “much to high” and that present price fixing was unfair to the consumer and the producer. Among those who| will act as spekesmen for the Federation will be Mr. Wetter, Albert Neuerburg and Thomas Daily. |Mr. Daily is chairman of the Federation’s committee studying the proposed milk ordinance for Indianapolis. The ordinance would: probit the selling of any milk but Grade A.|

SEWER PROJECT UNLIKELY NOW

Northeast League Believes They Are Several Years In Future.

Construction of service sewers. for the area north of E. 38th St., represented by the Northeast Civic League, may not begin for several years, it is believed by League members. Obstacles to construction were putlined at a meeting of the group several days ago and a program to cope with the situation will be formulated May 7 at the regular League meeting at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Millersville Road and Eastern Ave. Mrs. Opal Adney, secretary of the group, said that the organiaztion las been informed that sewer construction would not be practical until Keystone Ave. is improved and widened. * The improvement of Keystone Ave. would be welcomed by residents of the area, but this improvement is believed impractical until the bridges on Keystone over Fall Creek are replaced. “And the bridges can’t be .constructed because there isn‘t enough money,” Mrs. Adney said she was told. Petitions for more adequate street lighting and for city water are being distributed in the neighborhood and will pe presented te-City officials. League members are anxiQus to get a complete water service in their community to eliminaie the fire hazard which they say exists because many homes are more than two blocks from the nearest fire hydrant.
