ERAS § BEEN NEXT WEEK ON | STREETS HERE
Reconstruction of South S Alabama to Kentucky, Is Included.
Work on the City’s spring street repair and sewer building program will start next week, City Engineer M. G. Johnson announced today. The program, released by the Works Board yesterday, includes the
$66,397 reconstruction of South | St. " from Alabama to Kentucky Ave, fcur other street | improvements, three alley paying jobs and the installation of three local sewers. Although contracts had been. let for the work several weeks ago, the program was delayed pending settlement of legal detail which arose out ‘of the use of WPA labor on some of the jobs. Cost to the City of the program will be slightly more than $100,200, Mr. Johnson said. WPA Help Rejected [| The improvement of South St., largest street reconstruction of /the year, will be done without WPA labor, although; work-relief aid on part of the job was offered. The WPA agreed to furnish laborers for some work provided no WPA labor would be used in removing the car tracks of Indianapolis Railways, Ine. Board members rejected WPA
~ ald after deciding that WPA stip-
ulations in doing the work might lead to complications. The rough cobblestone thoroughfare, considered one of the most important crosstown routes on [the South Side, will be paved with concrete. Other street improvements to |get under way include the paving .of Kappes St. from Morris to Miller Sts., of Congress Ave. from Boulevard Place to Indianapolis Ave., and of Somerset Ave. from Michigan to Walnut Sts.
Alleys to be Improved
The three alleys to be improved are the first alley north of 33d St. from Clifton to Elmira Sts., the first alley east of Station St. from 22d St. to Massachusetts Ave. and the first alley north of 35th St. from Clifton St. to Barnes Ave. : Local sanitary sewers will be nstalled in Kappes St. from Miller St. to the first alley north of Minnesota St., Oxford St. from 21st St. fo 30 feet south of 23d St.
In addition, curbs and walks will |
be built on Tacoma Ave. from 37th to 38th Sts. WPA labor will be used on all except the Oxford St. Bosart Ave. sewer installations and the South St. improvement.
DECLARES NEW DEAL NOW ON DEFENSIVE
Times Special - EVANSVILLE, Ind, April 19. “The New Deal and its subsidiary little New Deal in Indiana are on the defensive, former Congressman David Hogg, Ft. Wayne, Republican gubernatorial aspirant, told the Independent Republican Harmony Club last night.. Mr. Hogg said, that “apparently he New Dealers and little New Dealers are so busy worrying about
"their Two Per Cent Club in Indiana
that they do not have time to observe constructive suggestions being made by the Republican Party and those carrying its banner.” Among the points in his platform, he said, are a broader use and consumption of Hoosier products, reduction of the State gasoline tax to 3 cents, elimination of direct and indirect ft and rackets, fixing definite salaries for all public officials and turning extra fees into public funds; abolishing auto license bureaus; a sufficient old-age, mothers’ and blind pension laws.

He shot the hog once but couldn't get close enough for a fatal shot. The deputy appeared and fired, scoring a hit. - Patrolman Busch finally got close enough when the hog slowed down becauke of loss of blood and administered the coup de grace.
