The State Budget Commit ee has authorized transfer of $500, rom the highway fund to match eral WPA (appropriations for new $6,000,000 road improvement project. Plans for this program, which is in addition to‘the regular $15,000,000 road work for this year, were revealed by the State Highway Commisison last Wednesday. ‘The program calls for resurfacing 1200 miles of secondary roads in the State, (giving employment 7100 men for one year. WPA offitials at at Washington are understood to have agreed to allot $5,000,000 for the work, leaving the State to pay $2,500,000. $2,000,000 Now in Fund

The State ‘Highway Department already had in its maintenance fund $2,000,000 and the $500,000 transfer approved by the budget committee yesterday was needed to complete the state’s share. | The budget committee also approved additional appropriations totaling $173,000 for various State institutions and departments. The! Gross Income Tax Department was allotted $75,000 adgitional operating funds. Under the law the tax department is permitted funds up to 3% per cent of its tax collections. This additional appropriation will bring the operating expenses for this year to 2.97 per cent of the total receipts, according to A. C. Ketchum, State Budget director. Offers Advice, But No Children

(NEA) .—If you want to adopt a cnild, don’t write to the Children’s Bureau. That Bureau does lots of things, but it doesn’t pro« vide children. ! pit 1 A lot of people got the idea that it did, this past winter, and some hundreds wrote in saying they wanted a child and would the Bureau send one along, please. Agnes Hanna, the Bureau’s social service director, who had to answer all those letters, finally found out people had been misreading a recent book, which advised prospective foster-parenis to write the Children’s Bureau for advice. To stem the flood, the Bureau finally had tof get out a special pamphlet. It tells all who are interested to consult agencies in the home town if they want to adopt children.

Conservation Men Now Plot Against 1940 Crop of | Pests in State. |

Last year’s Japanese beetles | nave been attended to, finally, in: Indiana, and the Conservation Department is getting ready for this year’s. | | Yesterday, the last of 30 acres of infested land around the Indianapolis|and Indiana University hospital group was treated. The work was delayed over winter because of ¢old weather. The treatment consists of putfing 1000 pounds of .arsenate of lead on each acre and then washing it into the roots of the grass. The grubs of the beetle, gnawing at the grass roots, get enough of the lead to, kill them. ¥ 200 Acres Treated

There has been no instance, | department men said, where land sO treated has produced a second generation of beetles. A total of 200 acres of infested land was so treated in the state, 82 of them in Indingapolis. The treatment and the work of trapping which will begin the last of June, is financed by the State and Federal governments. It is part of a nation-wide fight against} the pest which, in the East, has proved to be a definite economic hazard.
