Miss Elinor Curtiss . stylish for another season.
Miss Elinor Curtiss, 1204 Sturm Ave., has worn $807 worth of clothes in the last four years. These clothes have cost her a total of $212. Her spring outfit is increasing this total only slightly because it will consist mostly of re-stylings of clothes she already has. A junior at Tech High School, Miss Curtiss has been’ a 4-H Club member for the last eight years and in that time has won 102 ribbons, 79 of them first priges, free of them sweepstakes. For the last four years, she has kept a complete check of every cent she has spent on clothing—even to recording that she has had 60 handkerchiefs and 23 cleaning bills. The cleaning bills and the cost of shoes will be the principal cost! of her spring outfit, she says. She has taken an |inventory of all her clothes and decided which garments can be re-styled to look as’ good as 1940 Paris fashions, which are not worth repairing and which can be used for making clothes for her 6-year-old sister. Saturday morning in Room 431, Federal Building, she will tell other 4-H girls from all over the county what this inventory has shown and what she will do for her spring wardrobe—put a new collar on this blue coat, change the neckline on that wash dress, etc. Miss Curtiss, like. many another school-girl, likes to wear sweaters and skirts. For that reason, she has

time for sewing. She has had six tailored suits, some of them made by herself. The latest one is the best, she thinks. Her mother, Mrs. Esther Curtiss, a dressmaker at 806 [Roosevelt Building, also likes it the | best and points out that the girl made a tailored winter coat to match that suit. Although hosiery provides the greatest total on her list, Miss Curtiss thinks anklets have cut that total down considerably. | | She has worn 38 pairs of silk stoc] ings and 30 pairs of anklets. That seems like too many to a man, but her mother says many women wear | a pair a week. The Tech junior has | worn 14 pairs-of shoes and they have been repaired 20 times. She says she has discovered that cheap shoes are false economy; the better ones have had to be repaired fewer times. Seven hats, one of them made over for a second season, and seven pairs of gloves are on her four-year inventory. There = are | also 21 blouses, nine nightgowns, two pair of slippers, a house coat and a robe. Besides the blue coat she is restyling for spring, Miss Curtiss is making herself a new spring coat. The other day a Purdue Extension Service Clothes specialist; was in Indianapolis to talk to Miss Curtiss. She asked for a copy of her inventory and her cost records. That
had 26 sweaters in the past four}request meant as much as a sweep-

BIOFF LOSES PLEA IN
ILLINOIS HIGH COURT
SPRINGFIELD, Ill, April 11 (U. P.).—William Bioff, Hollywood motion picture labor leader today lost| an attempt to have the Illinois Supreme Court reconsider its refusal to grant him supersedeas and bail in his effort to escape serving an 18-year-old jail term for pandering. The court denied Bioff’'s motion for a supersedeas writ on April 3 and his counsel asked the tribunal the next day to reconsider its action, questioning legality of his conviction at Chicago in 1922 on a charge of sharing the earnings of a prostitute. Bioff, West Coast representative of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, now is free under $5000 bond posted, with Cook County (Chicago) Criminal Court. Unless he obtains a new continuance or obtains relief through some means, he must return to jail on April 15. Bioff was sentenced in, 1922 to six months in the House of Correction and fined $300. Court records show that he served eight days and then was released on appeal to the State Appellate Court. =n The Appellate Court upheld the sentence buf, he never returned to jail.

Kin To Nylon
Found in Wood
By Science Service CINCINNATI, April 11.—Liquid ‘wood, produced by the same. kind of methods by which Germany is now creating much of its gasoline from coal, is the newest product of Canadian chemical science. Water-white liquids are obtained which chemists believe will provide the raw materials for a future synthetic organic chemical industry.
Prof. Harold Hibbert of McGill University described the new way of processing wood at the meeting of the American Chemical Society here. One of the new liquid woods, Prof. Hibbert explained, “is so closely related to the raw material from which the synthetic fibre nylon is made that it should readily prove possible to obtain from it a new variety of this interesting fibre, the raw material being wood instead of coal.” Liquid woods are made under high pressure by adding hydrogen to the molecules. A similar method can be used with coal to make ‘liquid petroleum in a way first discovered by the German Nobelist, Dr. Friedrich Bergius.
