SELLING WAVE CHECKS GAINS

: Traders Try to Evaluate

~ Latest Developments in European War.

NEW: YORK, April 9 (U. P).— Stocks displayed a nervously mixed trend in mid-session dealings today after an early buying rush had been followed by a selling wave as traders attempted to evaluate latest developments in the European war. U. S. Steel and Bethlehem were around previous closing levels at 1 p. m. following earlier erratic price movements. “Big Steel” hit 63% in the early updrive and then fell to 62% in a selling rush

7 that got under way around noon.

Chrysler fell almost 4 points before

2 Imeeting support and at mid-ses-

sion was selling around 873%, off 2%. International Paper issues,” which

2|led the Initial upward move with ale gain of more than 2 points in

common and about 5 points in preferred, rallied to near the highs. Douglas Aircraft had a one-point decline after an early 1l-point gain and most other aircraft issues showed small losses. Shipping,

z chemical and copper -shares held

part of early advances.

Scandinavian Bonds .|Break Sharply

NEW YORK, April 9 (U.P).— Danish and Norwegian dollar bonds broke widely on the New York Stock Exchange in forenoon trade. Norway 6s of 1944 crashed . 39 points to 55% per cent of par, while Denmark 4%s of 1962 dropped 147% to 25, and the 5s of 1952 broke 11% to 27, all new lows for the year. There are no Swedish bonds listed on the Exchange. German obligations receded 2 points and more and Belgian issues dropped as much as 4 points. Italian liens reached new 1940 bottoms on losses ranging to around 5 points. U. S. Government bonds also were hard hit by general selling with declines ranging to nearly a point.

Cotton Futures Rise 50%Cents

NEW YORK, April 9 (U.P.).— Cotton futures advanced as much as 50 cents a bale on active speculative demand. However, the advance here did not fully reflect the sharp gains in foreign markets. Liverpool closed with net gains of 25 points, the one-day limit.

Currencies Suspended

From Trading

NEW YORK, April 8 (U. P.).— New York banks today suspended trading in the currencies of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. British banks earlier suspended dealings in the monies of Norway and Denmark. : At the close of dealings last night the Danish unit was quoted at 19.31 cents, Swedish at 23.83% cents and Norwegian at 22.7112 cents.
