FRIDAY, APRIL Du Maurier - Movie Stays
Maybe it’s Just an accident, but the only two pictures in recens .months to play Loew's for more than <a week were produced by David O. Selznick, and based on novels by: feminine writers.
although the Rebecca - of Miss Du Maurier’s book never puts in an appearance. Likewise both books seem to have done a lot for two formerly unnaticed actresses, Vivien " Leigh, Mr. Selznick’s Scarlett, and Joan Fontaine, as the second Mrs. de Winter. | } The si ty does not extend to the twc authors, however. Miss Mitchel: is a Georgian from a Jaan ily of law ers and newspape who spent 10 years preparing : writing her single novel. | | Miss du Maurier is a descendant of a distinguished line of English literary and theatrical figures. Her grandfather, | George, was the author of “Trilby” and “Peter Tibbetson,” among other things. © Gerald Du Maurier, her father, was one of the most famous actors of his day. i -

It Appears 1939-1940 Season I Closed With ‘Heavenly Express’ Showing Canceled
1939-40 season at English’s.
time the show reached English’s, it is quite likely that the author's vaunted wit would have to be supplemented . by air-conditioning be-:
coaxed past the lobby. As for “Heavenly Express,” it suddenly gave up a tour that probably would have kept it on the road until fall, and is heading straight for Broadway following an engagement in*Dayton. O. Originally the play was to be seen here next Friday and Saturday, then go on to St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo and into Chicago the middle of May. ” 2 » WITH SUCH PLAYERS as the young and admired John Garfield, Aline MacMahon, Harry Carey, the movie veteran, and Russell Collins, a local boy, the play should have gone well here. But reviews from Washington and Pittsburgh, though kind, revealed that Albert Bein’s
[new work was not a resounding hit.
There also are reports that the play frequently had been in the pits for repairs. between performances. “Heavenly Express,” one learns, is
'a fantasy on railroading; all’ about ‘a young railroader who died 19 lyear8 before and reappears, and the
Great Engineer, and the Heavenly

Fe tracks at 2000 miles an hour. But Mr. Bein’s celestial caboose is definitely over the horizon as far as Indianapolis is concerned. So there seems little to do except look far ahead to the prospects for next season. ” 8 2 FROM HERE they look good. Tallulah Bankhead °in “The Little Foxes”; “The Philadelphia Story,” starring Katharine Hepburn; “Life With Father,” “Margin for Error,” “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” “The Male Animal” and “The Time of Your Life” appears to be safe bets. ; Then we should have a musical or two, what with five revues now doing nicely on Broadway and two already on the road. Perhaps also we might be granted another “world premiere” (Hollywood for pre-New York tryout) .-. . And don’t sell “Tobacco Road” too short.
