NEW IDEA ABOUT HON STA
y formation in So in Some: Cases Upsets Previous Notions Of Geologists.
The current oil drilling in Indiana, more than twice as much as in 1038, is furnishing much valuable information on the geological strueture of the state which otherwise would be too costly to obtain. * And the newly obtained information has, in some instances, upset previous notions of geologists. Assistant State Geologist Gordon Fix Sqmiised today. en a well is drilled, the drillers d samples of what is, found about every five to 10 feet. These are studied - and recorded hy the State Geologists and give an actual picture of what, in many cases, had been a theoretical picture before.
Posey ‘Well Surprised Them Thus, when:a well was drilled in
feet the deepest in the state so far—
that the-strata which comes first under ‘Indianapolis, from.50 to 100
feet down, was struck at 4800 feet down there. | The geologists knew it would be deeper in Posey County than in Marion County, but they had not supposed: it would be that dep. It rearranged, to some extent, their ideas of the behavior of the strata that underlie Indiana. : . | Moreover, if the drilling continues, and the geologists say they believe maybe eight or 10 more oil fields eventually will be discovered in Indiana, the research may locate other major rock faults.
One Major Fault Mapped |
Only one major fault is now mapped in Indiana. * It | runs through + Monroe Lawrence and Washington - counties and was worked -out in detail only about 10 years ago. Many. minor faults are known, but none besides the {one that potentially’ might cause! an earthquake: of more than local in-
Even the major fault might never cause “a quake, they said, because they believe it to be a dead fault, that is, .one that has moved all it is going to move. +, But: they hastened to add that there is no way of telling -absolutely about that. | . The large known Indiana fault, they said, probably extends down thousands of feet.
