War Deadens | i Holiday Haven

By HELEN WORDEN Times Special Writer

NEW YORK, March 29.—Mr. and Mrs. James A. Morrison have just returned from a three-week vacation in Jamaica. The couple di-

vided their holiday between the Constant Springs Hotel in Kingston and the Hotel Chatham at Montego Bay, with several - excursions into the wilder jungle interior. Mr. Morrison is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Morrison, Indianapolis. : The couple found the island delightfully warm for swimming and sun bathing, but socially as dead as New York in mid-summer. As a British possession it has the war atmosphere of London. There's a total blackout once a week in Kingston and a semi-blackout every other night. 0

‘Harbor Heavily Mined

They were told that the harbor was heavily mined and that outside the town was a concentration camp for| the crews of scuttled German ships. Food was a hardship for the American visitors because practically nothing is imported. The Ho fruit is still delicious, but the vegetables are canned, the beef is poor, and although lamb appears on the menus, the Morrisons discov= ered it’s really goat. * The night life in the former glittering Glass Bucket Cabaret is confined to Saturday evening. Only once a week is there an orchestra for dancing. When Mr. and Mrs. Morrison went there they had to grope their way to the hotel afterward through dimly lit, shadowy | streets.

Tourist Trade Dwindles

Since the tourist and cruise trade ‘has dwindled, few of the other cafes have been able to stay open. ¢ It’s practically impossible to get to the island, as the Morrisons learned when ghey started to unravel the red tape. They even had to get regular passports which was never true before the war. As none Hy of “the cruise boats stop there, the i couple went down on the United Fruit Co.’s Ama Pala and returned on the Atlantida. i The Morrisons plan to spend & quiet spring in’ their apartment at 33 Sutton Place South. .
