MELONS CAN'T FOOL MECHANICAL TASTER
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., March 15 (U.P.).—When it comes to sampletasting muskmelons, the tongue takes a back seat to a mechanical “taster” devised by two University of Minnesota horticulturists. T. M. Currence and R. Larson, f the horticulture department, reort building a small, tube-like apparatus which is a faster and more ‘accurate melon sampler than the
tongue.
The process is simple. A drop of ‘melon juice is placed on a small plate and light passing through it reflects to show the exact sugar content or sweetness of the melon. The “refractometer” is twice as rapid as the old method of person-|— al tasting, Currence said.
PNEUMONIA REMEDY
.| CURES AILING RATS
®
> ¥
<.
By Science Service NEW YORK, March 15.—The new chemical remedy, sulfapyridine, which is saving thousands of pneu-monia-threatened human lives is proving a boon to the laboratory rat, that humble but vitally useful animal on whose hody tests of human life-saving methods are so often made. Sulfapyridine mixed with the rat’s food will cure severe attacks of “sniffles” in rats, Dr. Fred Y. Billingslea of Western Reserve University reports in the current issué of Science, published here. For light attacks of “sniffles” sulfanilamide is useful. This chemical, however, apparently cnly slows the progress of the disease in more extreme and deep-seated cases. If the rat is too sick to eat, he is first given an injection of sulfanilamide. When this has fought down the infection to the point where appetite returns, the cure is completed by mixing sulfapyridine with the food.

BRITISH PUSH DRIVE . FOR MORE GARDENS
LONDON, March 15 (U. P.).—The Ministry, of Agriculture, backed by variotis ‘societies, ‘is planning a big food production campaign. By public meetings and lectures, by committees, by every means] possible, householders jare being] ed to make use of their gardens and to increase their work on allot‘ments. At present it is estimated that there are roughly 3,500,000 private gardens in England and Wales, in addition to some 1,500,000 allotments which will be under cultivation in the spring, and the campaign is still forging ahead.
