'HURSDAY, MARCH 14, Choir to Give Two Concerts
Symphonic Group to Sing Tomorrow, Saturday.
de Sew afternoon and Saturing the Indianapolis SymPhonic Choir will make its annual appearance on the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's subscription concerts at the Murat, singing in ruckner’s “Te Deum” under Fabien Sevitzky’s direction. These 200 singers are, for the most part, amateur musicians who cheerfully give of their time in Weekly rehearsals through the season for the joy of singing, rather than for any emolument or applause. These singers seldom want or get publicity. So the other day the symphony orchestra’s publicity department took pity upon them and, at considerable risk of life and limb, prepared some statistics for public consumption. Choosing -15 men and 15 women at random from the group, the publicist procured the following data: : _ Six men and five women are married, and the total number of children from each group was seven. Average age of the women is slightly more than 30, and: of the men, 31plus. Six of the tenors and basses were born in Indiana, and seven of the distaff side are Hoosiers. All but one of the women singers have had musical training, ranging from one year in three instances to 13 years in the most highly trained of the group. All but five of the men have had music instruction, with the average tutelage being two years. . Eight men and. seven women are connected with other choral érganizations.

'La Mer' Retains Beauty in Waxing
“and-on work, Serge Koussevitzky,
- of the wind and the sea.”
AFTER TWO YEARS of off-
the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Victor recording people — meticulous artists all—have made available their recording of Debussy’'s “La Mer.” . The result completely justifies the effort. None of the music’s shimmering beauty has been lost in the waxing. Mr. Koussevitziiy’s interpretation is as fluid and sparkling and free from angularities as the sea in Debussy’s tonal painte ing. His performance has both delicacy and power when the occasion requires. Ne detail of clar= ity or precision seems’ to have: "been overlooked in a unified, thoughtful and sensitive setting forth of the composer’s wishes. And of course the conductor’s instrument is one which is not sur« passed in this nation of -excellent orchestras. ! : : . For the benefit of those un familiar with the work, “La Mer” consists of three parts: “From dawn till noon on the sea,” “Sport of the waves” and “Dialog It is opulent. music which discloses added beauties with repeated hearings. Without attempting to throw salt spray in his listeners’ faces, Debussy here has created a subtle and stimulating example of program music. The perceptive imagination scarcely can fail to be. moved by this masterly evidence of Debussy’s love of the sea and perception of its beauties. : ” tJ ”
This week two bands thought enough of two songs from the new Bing Crosby-Bob Hope-Doro-thy Lamour film, “Road to Singapore,” to put them on wax. The favored twosome is “Too Romane tic” and “Sweet Potato Piper,” played for Victor by Tommy Dorsey and for Bluebird by Glenn Miller, First of these is slow, pleasant and sentimental; sung by Ray Eberle on the Bluebird disc, and by Frank Sinatra for Dorsey. Tommy also contributes an extraspecial trombone chorus. The. Dorsey boys use a real “sweet potato” in the amusing novelty on the reverse side, and the lyrics are well sung, whichever your choice. By and large, though, honors are to Mr. Dorsey. SR Following : their double-face re-
cording of “Milenberg Joys,” Tommy and his band have used both

Big news on the current Varsity record list is the appearance of a new release by Rudy Vallee, In fact, it's a new Rudy Vallee. . The crooner has abandoned his soulful stanzas for a couple of items in the Dwight Fiske manner—except that Grandma can listen to the words without blushing. On one side of the record Rudy recites a little number called “Plaza 3-4783” and on the other he sings “Six Women,” Both are with piano accompaniment. “Plaza 3-4783” is about the young man who made the Yale

distinguished himself, then graduated into a job with a “personal escort” service. It's by Harold Rome, the “Pins and Needles” librettist, and is pretty cute. “Six Women” is subtitled “Me and Henry VIII.” Get it? J f 2 . For Royale, Johnny Green has made three corking good records this week. All feature the band leader’s smooth piano playing. One of them has “I Walk With Music” from “Three After Three,” which recently played here. That old favorite, “Irene,” is on the re--verse side. “I Walk With Music is a right pretty tune—by Hoagy Carmichael, you know. From the Broadway musical, “Two for the Show,” Maestro Green has selected “A House With a Little Red Barn” and “How High the Moon.” And his third contribution comprises two popular “classics,” “Body and Soul” and “Out of Nowhere.” 2 2 2
Two new Victor items are Sammy Kaye's “Head on My Pillow” (in a languorous IL.ombardo manner) and “Love Song of Renaldo”; the New Friends of Rhythm doing “Foster Chile” (Old Black Joe in a jam session) and an original by Alan Shulman called “High Voltage.” Two more swell examples of long-hair virtuosos in .the groove. ; For Bluebird, Charlie Barnet and his band have done “Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie,” at a fire-truck tempo and with a_ four-alarm tenor sax chorus, and “Southland Shuffle,” only slightly
less raucous.

This is one method of cooking .....
Today, however, the modern GAS range has put a new slant on cooking. Instead of oldfashioned "pot watching" and "oven peeking," your streamlined GAS range and its many recent improvements make cooking a pleasure. The famous Magic Chef “red wheel" oven heat control, for instance, assures perfect baking . . . while popular low-tem- - perature cooking ‘on modern top "simmer" burners eliminates needless boil-overs. When you pay your gas bill, look at MAGIC CHEF (No. 6401-14). At $94.50 and your old stove, it's a good buy!

The Filmarte Guild ended its second season on a pleasant note with a showing of the French film, “The End. of a Day,” at the Athenaeum last night. Judged by Hollywood's =zverage standards, some of the Filmarte's importations this year were sub-par. But “The End of a Day’ was thoroughly Gallic and thoroughly delightful, and something thet never could have come from our increasingly amazing West Coast. For this reason it was all the more welcome and admirably fulfills the the Filmarte's purpose—to show us what contemporary Europe has been doing with lights, sound and cameras. “The End of a Day” is a touching, amusing story of life in a home for retired actors. There are three chief characters; who still thinks himself irresistible and nearly drives a young girl to suicide to satisfy the ego of -his diseased mind; the brilliant but unsuccessful actor whose wife, years before, was driven to her death by this same Don Juan; and Gabrissade, the perennially youthful gnome
.| who spent his life in the theater as
an understudy, and dies before he can realize his ambitious to do a really great part. In addition there is. a host of delightful minor incidents. For instance, the one where the devoted and aged couple summon their eight children, 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren to witness their belated wedding. The whole film catches admirably the naive egotisms, jealousies and brave falsehoods which are part and parcel of stage folk’s exasperating fascination. :
