BACKBOARD
By J. E. O'BRIEN
USUALLY in a community that still has an employed high school basketball team at this season of the year, the citizens are too busy, excited and worried to carry their thoughts into otner athletic fields.
But not so at. Lafayette
and Bloomington. Although
the Bronchos and Panthers remain in the Sweet Sixteen,
folks at these two stops on the Monon won’t quite arguing the Purdue-Indiana basketball situation, which it must be admitted, never was .settled to everybody’s satisfaction. It all started when the Boilermakers won the Big Ten title. But quicker than it takes the morning Monon train to run from Gosport to Ellettsville Bloomington was back with this answer: “Yes, but we beat ’em twice didn’t we?” Then Indiana was chosen to play in the N. C. A. A. eastern eliminations, to be heid at the Butler Field‘house on March 22 and 23.
The Lafayette Angle
Here’s what the Lafayette CourierJournal had to say about that: “Some Purdue fans are asking why the Boilermakers, champs of the Big Ten, are not representing the Midwest. The answer is that Coach Lambert, Athletic Director Kiser, President Elliott and the. faculty
members felt that a 20-game sched- |.
ule was enough. That has been Purdue policy in the past and the N. C. A. A. asked Boilermaker officials about their stand before selecting Indiana. Lambert and Kiser
- even went so far as to recommend
Indiana as the choice, if McCracken and the powers that be at Bloomington felt they wanted to enter the tournament, There are no ‘sour grapes’ here. . . . Strangely ondh The Bloomington Telephone disagreed. I. U. officials were quoted by The Telephone as follows: “There’s not one bit of truth in those statements. We checked very closely before ac-|. cepting the N. C. A. A. bid to be sure that we were the first choice. We were informed that Indiana had ' been choice of two of the three coaches on the first ballot and that the lone straggler changed his vote for Indiana to make it unanimous on the next ballot.” That was the last communique to come to our attention. Either side probably will have to get an approval from the fire underwriters before penning any more notes. ” 2 2
Gage Is the Name
Immediately after Shortridge'’s lettermen’ were named yesterday, they went into a huddle and named Dick Gage honorary captain for the past season. Gage, who was the only letter winner Coachi|€ Ken Peterman had for a team nucleus at the beginning of the So _ is season, perhaps . reached his peak Dick Gage form in the regional last Saturday when he scored 15 points. He missed several games this year after pulling a ligament in the Cathedral game Jan. 10. The lettermen, who will be feted with a banquet at Hollyhock Hill Wednesday evening, are Gage, Larry | - Yeager, Walt Freihofer, Jim Wiley, Charles Benjamin, Bryan West, Dave Strack, Bob Paddock and Sheldon Watson, student manager. » = =
~ While Park’s basketball team was going about its business of winning the Midwest Prep School title, the boys were quartered on the same floor of a Watseka, Ill, hotel with the Culver cagers, their bitterest rivals. We have Mike Keene's word for it, though, that no inter-room warfare flared. “Why, we even ate together,” Mike reported.
” ” ” ‘Right You Are (We Hope)
Dear Backboard: In my estimation there are only two feams that can even think of winning the state championship. They are Washington and South Side of Ft. Wayne. The other teams might as well go home, and Sleep peacefully. The Hatchets have a sight edge. A FAN. »
A Monument, No Less
Hoosier basketball will have a monument in its honor if a campaign started by the Indiana University chapter of Sigma Delta Chi is successful. The Bloomington journalism boys already have $50 in . their monument fund and hope to have the memorial erected by the time of the 1941 high school tournaments. - The memorial will be a limestone
» s
basketball on a limestoné base. The|
ball itself will be four feet in diameter and will be placed on the former site of old Assembly Hall, _ where the first state tournament "was held in 1911, Names of the state championship teams which won titles in the campus building from 1911 to 1917 will appear on the monument. The state champions will be invited to Bloomington for the dedication ceremonies. % 2

Seabiscuit Retired To Ranch
ARCADIA, Cal, March 12 (U. P.). —Seabiscuit quit the turf today to spend the rest of his life far from the race tracks on which other horses will pursue his records for many years to come. The doughty little veteran who climaxed a fabulous. career by supplanting Sun Beau as the greatest money winner in history will be shipped late this week to the Charles S. Howard ranch near Ukiah, Cal, where he will perpetuate his strain. “A champion should retire. while he still is champion,” Howard explained. “He is in better condition now than at any other time in his great cgreer, but he has earned a rest. “We wouldn't want to see him beaten, now that he is the king. So now is the proper time to send him to stud at Ridgewood Ranch. That is where he made his comeback after being forced on the ‘shelf with an injured ankle ligament a year ago, and that is where he will remain for the rest of his days.” Seabiscuit retires as the winner of $437,730—or aimost $60,000 more than W. S. Kilmer’s Sun Beau, which won $376,744 and held the record for nine years. He will also go as the conqueror of almost every great horse of his generation and the holder of 12 track records from Santa Anita to Suffolk Downs.
Kansas Quintet Ousts St. Joe
KANSAS CITY, Mo. March 12 (U. P.). — The week-long national intercollegiate basketball tournament was only a one-day stand for eight first-round losers today, but for each of those there was a. winner, eager for new victory. The remaining eight games of the
first round program will be completed today. Then the tournament gets down to serious business. Winners yesterday were “®'est Texas State; Glenville, W. Va., State Teachers College; Hamline Univer-
sity of St. Paul; East Texas State of |
Commerce; Tarkio, Mo., College; Pittsburg, Kas, Teachers; Southeastern of Durant, Okla., and Appalachian College of Boone, N. C. The Pittsburg Teachers ousted St. Joseph’s, only Hoosier entry 4n the meet, by a 47-26 count. The Indiana club put .on a scoring burst early in the second half in an attempt to cut the Kansans’ 21-12 edge at the intermission, but the victors checked the rally. Neil Mosser, St. Joe center who established an all-time Indiana college “scoring "record this season, scored 14 points to boost his total to an even 300.
