NEW YORK, March 12.—The economy drive in Washington has gotten around to hitting Admiral Byrd. The economy section of Con-|

E gress has refused to make the neca essary appropriation to keep the Admiral in the Antarctic for the reqquisite time to complete his work there. : ‘Some people think this is ungracious. On this point I can report nothing. But the chief reason assigned in Washington strikes me as interesting—interesting as illustrating the manner in which governments sow little seeds out of which perhaps acorns and then trees may grow. The chief reason given why the Government ought to continue Admiral Byrd’s expedition appropriation is that it is needed to complete the Admiral’s occupation of that land for the United States.
