NEW YORK, March 9.—This is the time in the pre-election period when Wall Street begins to indulge In the kind of talk which almost always helps the candidate it dislikes. Perhaps it would be fairer to

Wall Street to say that this is the time when some of its less steadyminded citizens do this foolish talking.

g. The talk generally takes the form of announcing that this firm or that one will go out of business or curtail its activities or fire its employees if a Democrat is elected President. In 1936 one particularly voluble gentleman declared he would sell all he had and retire to a farm if Roosevelt was re-elected. 2 ”® ” NOW ONE HEARS that leases have been made to expire Dec. 1 if 8 Republican is not elected, or that

a partnership agreement has been

drawn to expire in November so M

that the partners may be free to make whatever dives or flights or other exits from the scene which may seem wise if the wrong man is elected. Others inform us that the election of this “wrong man,” who-

ever he may be, will be the signal 1

for tremendous liquidation.

This is foolish talk. Not only is| se. invariably | |!

it foolish talk, but it helps the man it is aimed at. The People resent the threats contained in these super-heated forecasts. ‘Of course it is inevitable that, as things stand, the war and the election must take their place in the thinking of all who invest their money. So far as the election is concerned it is the verdict of history that always elections are referred to as disturbing factors in business and never do they turn out to be such.

» ” s

IN THE PRESENT case, if there is. one thing certain above others, it is that the period of reform is over. No matter who is elected President there are going to be no more reforms for the time being. And from many points of view that is too bad. Because there is so

much that ought to be done. And it is entirely possible that no candidate elected would prove quite as conservative as Roosevelt, if he a should win. So far as the war is concerned, that is a horse of another color. The uncertainties of the military events of the coming year are justly items of concern. It would be an excellent thing if Wall Street were to put a curb on its tongue as the great plebiscite nears. This would be a good thing not only for the country but for Wall Street. This election is going to be won not below Chambers St. in Manhattan, but west of the Hud- , son River—and plenty west of that point—and the talk that goes out |H from Wall Street is not going to help any Wall Street candidate.

"GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher

Today’s column is going to lead off with some pointless remarks— pointless because nobody in town has a television set and if they had there woud be no programs available for reception. Nevertheless, for the long-suffer-ing .record, be it said that at 7 p. m, tomorrow, on NBC-Blue, there will be a “gala” television broadcast by members of the Metropolitan Opera Co. Those taking part will “include | Bruna Castagna, Frederick Jagel, Lucia Albanese, Leonard Warren, Hiidi Reggiani, Armand Tokatyan, Burke,. Richard Bonelli, George Cehanovsky and Alessio De Paolis. Accompanying will be an NBC orchestra under Frank St. Leger’s direction. During the hour we may hear— and ‘the television set owners may hear and see—excerpts from “Carmen,” “La Gioconda,” “The Barber of Seville” and “Rigoleffo” and the first act of “Pagliacci.” #8 8 ‘The Toscanini fans have only one more week to wait before their favorite conductor again assumes his duties with the NBC Symphony Orchestra on their Saturday nigh: broadcasts. Meanwhile, this evening’s concert will be led by the last of Maestro Toscanini’s three very capable substitutes of the season, Bruno Walter. For his final appearance of the year Mr. Walter has chosen two Fifth Symphonies, those by Schubert and Tschaikowsky, as well as a sheaf of Minuets and German Dances by Mozart. Robert Casadesus, the French pianist, will be heard with ‘he New York Philharmonic-Symphony Or- ” ” 3
